Venice hotels
 

Having a hard time finding a nice hotel in the 150-200 (double) dollar range. Like the idea of NOT staying to close to St. Marks. I have looked in Castello, Dorsoduroa and Cannaregio and I like these neighborhoods.<BR>Any good recomendations?<BR><BR>Also has anyone heard/stayed at Hotel Apostoli?

Mike. I've heard positive things in this chat room about hotel Flora, Bisanzio, Galleria, La Calcina, Locanda Sturion, Rialto, and Pensione Accademia. I have not stayed in any yet but they have been recommended for cleanliness, location and freindly staff, etc. and are in your price range. I am staying at Locanda al Gambero (looks good on the web site). Speaking from my own experience, if you submit credit card numbers via email with your requests the rooms are "magically" available (this is why I couldn't secure reservatins at the above recommended locations until it was too late. <BR><BR>Good luck!

We stayed at Locanda San Barnaba in Nov 2000. It was recommended by Gourmet magazine when it opened a couple of years ago. Just off Campo San Barnaba in Dorsoduro at the Ca'Rezzonica vaporetto stop. I'd stay there again. Great location for sightseeing and good, reasonable restaurants in the area. Should fit your budget just fine - maybe even less, depending on when you are going.

Mike, I have reservations at the Hotel Galleria in October (around $100). A friend stayed at Locanda Nova last year. Thought it was great and reasonably priced (it was somewhere around 150 for a quad). <BR><BR>I have a file of postings on Venice I'd be happy to share...just send me an email.<BR><BR>Anne

try locando leon bianco. It's a great small hotel with inexpensive rooms, some facing the grand canal. Lots of favorable comments about it on this board. I stayed there and loved it.<BR><BR>http://www.leonbianco.it/

We stayed at the Galleria last year. A very small, charming hotel in a great location - just steps from the Dorsodoro vapertto stop, but reasonably quiet. Our room was tiny (about 6'x 12' plus bath), but it was right on the Grand Canal, and it was well under $100 a night with an in-room breakfast, which we ate sitting in our window ledge watching the morning 'rush hour' on the canal.

Check out Hotel American (there's nothing american about it). IT's in Dorsoduro around the corner from the bridge and seconds from the vaporetto stop. Very charming, reasonably priced, clean, on a quiet residential street with a decent breakfast included with rate. Best of all, it's away from the hustle and bustle of San Marco.<BR><BR>

Stayed at Pensione Accademia in '97 loved it. It's about a 20 mintue walk from St Marks on the other side of the canel, so it's kinda quiet and tucked away, but close to everything. Very, very, nice and charming! Would highly recommend it.<BR><BR><BR>http://www.pensioneaccademia.it/index-e.html

I know it is out of your price range, but I would strongly recommend Grand Hotel Dei Dogi in Canareggio. My wife and I just spent the first leg of our honeymoon there and it was wonderful. Easily one of the most romantic hotels in which I have stayed. The staff is top notch and friendly, it is off the beaten path, yet walking distance to all the sites (about 15 minutes to the train station, 20 to the Rialto and 30 to San Marco). If you are travelling off season, you might find an on-line deal within your budget for this hotel. Whatever you choose, have a great time.

Pensione La Calcina fits what you describe. I've stayed there twice.

St Marks is pretty overwhelmng during the day but at night its kind of a fun place to visit. We stayed at San Moise which wasn't right on the square but accessible in 5 min walk. Also fairly cheap. I would consider it...

Hi Mike, the rates also depend on the time of year you're planning to visit. Of course low season is generally in the wintertime. I believe it also includes August as well. There are many nice hotels in Venice that offer rates for less than 100 euro per night. One that comes to mind besides La Calcina is the Locanda Armizo albeit 99 euro for a double. It's just under 100 euro but I think the hotel looks pretty good. They offer a discount for cash payment. I'm also researching hotels and find Venice to be a bit on the expensive side. Also many buildings don't have elevators as the buildings are so old there's no room to install any. But that's another thing to consider in addition to the rates.<BR><BR>If you are referring to the Locanda ai Santi Apostoli, it's around the high 100's to 200+ euro per night. But it is written up as a very nice hotel. It's considered a splurge in Great Sleeps Italy.
