venice hotel suggestions
 

For our trip to venice i have my hotels down to a list of the following. my budget is for not more than 280 euros per night for a triple for two nights at the end of ocotober. any comments or suggestions for these other hotels would be so greatly appreciated:

Locanda sant agostin
pensione accademia
locanda san barnaba
locanda al leon
al pive
locanda ovidius
hotel do pozzi
hotel flora
hotel ala
hotel antioco doge
al gambero
hotel campiello

Okay, it is a lot, but if anyone could help me narrow down this list at all i would be so happy. (i apologize for any misspellings). I want to book this as soon as possible.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Locanda Sant Agostin last October and would easily recomend it. The room was large and beautiful, the people friendly and helpful. While not in the immediate vicinity of St. Mark's Square, it is centrally located for exploring the whole of Venice, and a reasonable walk from the train station with a good map. St. Mark's Square is beautiful and has much to offer but it is only a taste of what Venice has to offer. If time allows try to see some of every district. We couldn't squeeze it all in on the first trip so returned this spring for a second try and still couldn't fit it all in. Guess we'll have to go back---what a shame. :)

Good evening, Have used the DOPOZZI, eight times and prior that the ALA, twice have found both hotels very satisifactory for our needs and both in good location. For about the last five trips upgraded to the SATURNIA.

AL GAMBERO: we stayed here with friends in 1999. Rooms had recently been remodeled and baths were nice. Safe in the room. Located half way between Rialto Bridge and St Marks on Calle dei Fabbri. Would use this hotel again if in Venice.

Pensione Accademia: An absolutely charming hotel converted from a former Russian embassy. Although not on the same island as St. Mark's Square, it's an easy bridge away and sanctuary from the crowds. Our 3rd floor room does require an interesting hike (ie, no elevator) thru the property but it has a canal view and plenty of room for our family of 4. They serve free lemon tea from 4pm to 7pm; ice cold ones in summer and warm and toasty ones in winter! The movie Summertime with Katharine Hepburn

Have you checked if they have vacancy for your dates? One guide book said it can be fully booked well in advance.

Thanks so much for your reply. As a matter of fact, I e-mailed all the hotels on my list for availability last night, and I'm just going through them now. Pensione Academia did respond. They're offering me a "superior triple room" with a shower and breakfast for $260.00. From the sounds of your e-mail I think I might take it. I've also gotten offers from several others. was planning to go to go through each one and make a decision now. thanks so much for your help!

theresa, Pensione Accademia gets consistently nice reviews. I believe it is nearby to Pensione La Calcina, which I just now posted on your other thread as my Venice recommendation. I like to stay in this neighborhood (Dosoduro). It is a tiny bit out of the way, along the Guidecca Canal (wide shipping canal) but a quick walk across L'Accademia Bridge to get to San Marcos >15 mins. It is also very easily reached by vaporetto from the train station.

Wrong, wrong, I was wrong. Searching for someone else I see that Pensione Accademia is near the Rialto Bridge, not in the Dorsoduro. Sorry.

What 2 :) Actually P.Accademia IS in Dorsoduro between Ca'Rezzonico and Accademia Bridge. I liked P.Accademia and La Calcina both.

thanks so much for taking the time to suggest hotels for me. i'm going to look at the la calcina right now. it does seem as though a lot of people like the dosoduro (spelling?) area. thanks. i'll check it out right now.

Sounds like you have made your decision, but in case the hotel is not available,I recommend the Hotel Ala also. I stayed there 3 years ago and found the locaton very convenient, staff very helpful, and the rooms large and comfortable. They also serve a full breakfast and there is a vaporetto stop very close.

i haven't made my final decision yet. i've checked out all of the suggestions on this board. unfortunately, hotel la calcina had no availability. while pensione academmia is offering me a triple at 260 euros, but i have to move to another room the second night. does that sound reasonable? i've also received an offer from locanda sant agostin for $208 for a triple, and it's rated 8th for overall best venice hotels on tripadvisor.com. (pensione academmia is rated 9th.)

anyone have an opinion on locanda sant agostin. i'm about to reply right now. the proprietor sounds so nice. for me it's down to pensione academia and locanda sant agostin.

tree804, sorry I don't know about San Agostin. I loved my stay at P.Accademia 3 times (rooms with a side canal view) and 1 time at La Calcina (Giudecca Canal view - Great!). Pity you have to change the room for the 2nd night if you take P.Accademia. I might do it since I loved the place but it's up to you. With 3 persons, would it be too complicated to change after the 1st night?

You might like to try another hotel? I don't mean to complicate the things for you but just to give another idea: I have a 2 night reservation for this end of November at a new 4star hotel Foscari Palace. It opened last June across the Grand Canal from the fish market(I saw the construction last November.), near Rialto Bridge. The reviews (only 2 since it just opened) on Tripadviser.com are great. The hotel offered me EUR130(standard double),140(sup.dbl Campo view) and 160 sup.double Grand Canal view). I took 160.00 room though I could have been happy as well with 140.00 room. Three bedded room at this low season is 175. Even if the number of stars may not mean much, these rates are great for a 4-star. Theresa, I have also stayed at the Pensione Accademia and while I liked it, for a 2 night stay I would not agree to change rooms ANYWHERE. IMO there are enough good places and your budget is certainly ample enough to find something that will be as nice and more convenient. BTW, it is not far from La Calcina

It might help people to advise you if we knew who the 3 people were (age, singles? etc.), how you're coming and going (some places are more convenient to the airport vs.train) and what days of the week. I found that Venice was much busier on the weekends and if your 2 nights are weekend nights, I'd suggest staying further away from San Marco.

Also, you've been reading tripadvisor. If things like breakfast, size of rooms etc. are important to you, you should pay special attention to comments there. I read the reviews for San Agostin and it sounds a bit hard to find and the breakfast sounds minimal.

The Ala and the Do Pozzi are both owned or run by the same people I and they may also own or run the P. Accademia. Both of these hotels are closer to San Marco than P Accademia.

The Novecento is a small place that I think is owned by the Hotel Flora people. You might also check that.

BTW, there is a place called Palace Bonvecchiati that may be new and offering special intro rates. I also found a website http://www.precisionreservations.com/ that seemed to have very good (almost too good) rates on a number of hotels including the Duodo Palace.

I stayed at the FLora and thought it was delightful. Did you check tripadvisor?

Sorry about not mentioning the details. (i had mentioned them on a different post.) Okay, here they are. My 19 year old daughter (we're best friends - i'm 51, but very energetic) is taking one semester to study abroad in rome, and i and my future daughter-in-law - 28 years old (she was my friend first) are going to visit my daughter from 10/22 until 11/01. we're spending 3 nights in rome - 22nd, 23rd, 24th (already have the hotel - San francesco) and then traveling by eurostar -didn't get the tickets yet - to venice and then heading back down to florence (that's my next hotel search) for @2 days and then back to rome. we'll be in venice 25th & 26th - monday & tuesday. the reason we're heading back to rome is so that we can spend as much time as possible with my daughter - i know we won't want to leave.
