Venice hotel recommendation
 

I and my 2 daughters, ages 24 and 15, will be in Venice from 12/26 to 12/30.

We are looking to stay in a good location near interesting sites, but don't want to be too close to St. Mark's. Would prefer a more intimate hotel with a lot of charm and/or old world character. We would consider a great bed and breakfast also.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Venice isn't huge and you can get around so easily on the water bus (VAP). What's your budget??

Are you looking for a triple room? That might have to be your first search criteria.

Hi Lorijv, here are my pics:
- Hotel Pausania (http://www.hotelpausania.it/index_it.html): in Dorsoduro, "out of the beaten path", it's a delightful place, with an excellent value for money (I slept there twice)
- Cà Foscari Palace (http://www.hotelfoscaripalace.it/italiano/): in campo Santa Sofia, in a lovoly square on the Canal Grande, just were you get the Gondola Ferry to Rialto's market (for more info read my post "gondole and Cicchetti": http://wp.me/p3sImA-8). More expensive than Pausania. I slept there once.
- Hotel Pesaro Palace (http://www.hotelpesaropalace.it/italiano/). Srongly suggested by a reliable friend, it's located on the Canal Grande. I'm waiting for a promotion to sleep there...

Look at the Hotel American-Dinesen. I haven't stayed there, but it's been on my short list a couple of times, and I see it has triple rooms. I really like the Dorsoduro area.

I second Hotel American-Dinesen. I stayed there on very short notice at the beginning of August. I was only in Venice for one night and in addition to a nice clean room and excellent service, I found the location to be perfect.

At night I ate dinner at a wonderful restaurant right next door with a waiter that called me the princess haha. While I was eating I met a wonderful American couple who gave some tips as I had just arrived in Europe for the first time that morning. We could hear music playing and after I was finished eating I walked down toward the canal. There was a crowd of locals in their gondolas as well as people watching and listening on the sidewalk, while a group of men in a gondola played and sang.

It is one of my most memorable moments from the entire trip, sitting on the steps, eating gelato by the lights on the gondolas, listening to the music. It completely sold me on the dorsoduro area!

We recently stayed at Santa Margherita Guesthouse and loved it! We felt comfortable with the distance to major sites and loved being in a more quiet area. Campo Santa Margherita was less than a 5 minute walk and we completely fell in love with it - very cool vibe that would probably be popular with your daughters.

I believe they just have single and double rooms (with private baths), but they were arranged in a way that there were two rooms on each end of a hallway - one single and one double - and those pairs of rooms were behind their own door and shared a little private hallway space. So that might be a good set up for you.

Last December DH and I stayed at Hotel Al Ponte Antico, not too far from the Rialto Bridge. We enjoyed it very much, staff were friendly, breakfast was wonderful. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Hotel ai Reali this past March. Located in Castello in a quiet campo on an interior canal, but very close to the Rialto bridge and the vaporetto and an easy walk to San Marco without all the crowds. We had a triple room for me, hubby and our 17 yo son - they did upgrade us for free to a junior suite which was huge with tons of room, but I think the classic triple room would have been perfectly fine as well. The breakfast was excellent - and honestly the two dinners we had in the hotel were our best meals in Venice!

I agree about the Al Ponte Antico. Great place as is it's sister hotel, the Locanda Orseolo.

You cannot go wrong with either.

This 5-star property had 3-star prices in 2012. Highly recommended. It's near the Rialto Bridge.
