Just returned from Venice yesterday afternoon.

Not crazy about the location of the Abbazzia. Ca Dogaressa looks very nice. I stayed close to the Rialto Bridge and thought it was a perfect location.

If you want clean, simple, good breakfast, 3 min from San Toma stop try: http://alcampaniel.tripod.com/ easy access to all of Venice.

DH and I have stayed at Abbazia many times, and really love it. The front desk staff are delightful, and the rooms are very large for Europe and very clean. The breakfast is a typical European breakfast, with cold cuts, cheeses, pastries, hard cooked eggs, yoghurt, cereal, etc. If you request it, you can have a room with a real shower, rather than a tub with a hand shower. There is a lovely courtyard. We stayed once at Abbazia Deluxe, a sister hotel, but did not find it to be that much nicer than Abbazia, although it was higher priced.

Campiello Zen is by far the best located, IMHO.

I suspect you may have chosen the other three in less desirable locations because those are in cheaper neighborhoods. However, the Campiello Zen is in a very desirable location (close to Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and Scuola Grande Di San Rocco).

If it is comparable in price to the others and fits your budget, I would choose Campiello Zen.

Also, as a general note. I wouldn't travel from California all the way tho Venice and then skimp on location just to save 10 Euro a night on lodgings. It's not worth it, cut the budget elsewhere - maybe skipping a fancy dinner out or something.

I'd endorse Johanne's suggestion - al campaniel. Location is good, five minutes from the Frari and San Polo, ten minutes to Rialto, 20 to san Marco. And no bridges from the San Toma waterbius stop!

And the chocilate shop over the way is a true health hazard.

Bardo, so true, excellent advice about budge!! and not saving a few euros without examining other options.

We finally, after examining locations, prices, reviews, you Fodorites' suggestions, web pix--went with Campiello Zen. Bardo said it is a good location and it gets good reviews, price was the best of the lot...AND daughter found some of the hotels' "venetian" internet web photos of reds, brocades etc, a bit over the top. So we reserved the peaceful looking green room at Campiello Zen. It's called "choosing by interior design when Mom can't decide."

Joahanne and Peter, we'll head to Al Campaniel and follow our noses to the chocolate
