Venice Hotel
Looking for a Venice Hotel for a 2 night stay prior to a cruise which leaves out of San Basillio Port in early October.
I am finding it difficult to figure out which hotel would be convenient to the airport arrival and then the departure from San Basillio. Stairs are not a problem for us although we will be traveling with two large wheeled suitcases. Flexible on price. Internet a must.

That's because such a hotel doesn't exist.
Venice is a city that needs to be learned. "Convenience" has its own meaning in Venice.
Unless you book a hotel that has its own boat dock, and you arrive in Venice with a healthy budget to afford water taxis, schlepping two large suitcases, wheeled or not, will not be a fun thing to do in Venice.
That's because such a hotel doesn't exist.
Venice is a city that needs to be learned. "Convenience" has its own meaning in Venice.

I'll try and be more helpful.
Private water taxis and Venice's <i>vaporetti</i> are the only official boats that service the San Basilio dock. A private water taxi in Venice is the most "convenient" mode of transportation. It's also the least stressful and the most expensive.
Getting from the airport boat docks to the dock at San Basilio is easy and fast by water taxi. It's also a lovely ride. If you want to save money and take a vaporetto, you can, but the travel is more complicated, more stressful, and it involves making choices, which garner tons of varied opinions.
The Alilaguna Blu Line, another option, stops at Zattere, but the San Basilio dock is about an 8-minute walk from there, and you have to cross one bridge at the Rio San Trovaso canal.
Basing yourself within walking distance of the San Basilio dock seems to me to be the most convenient decision. However, San Basilio is not convenient to all the other reasons why people go to Venice. The walk to San Marco is quite long, but you can always get there by vaporetto, which means you'll need to study the public transportation options.
I love the San Basilio area, and I love the guys who run Locanda Avogaria, which is within walking distance, fairly flat and no bridges. It's a local neighborhood; some college kids, some construction workers, and lots of good places to eat and drink. The walks from San Basilio to all points north and east are beautiful and fascinating, but for a first-timer, these walks will be long and challenging, unless you have a great map and one of you is an excellent navigator.

I woud suggest picking a hotel near the Zattere stop of the Alilaguna Blu line. You will be in one of the most attractive areas of Venice, within many sights of interest within easy reach by foot or boat, and plenty of restaurants/bars/gelaterie right there, yet it is out of the worst of the tourist crush, with plenty of atmosphere and charm of its own.
When you need to go to the dock, you'll be 8 minutes away. You will have time beforehand to check out whether you can negotiate the 8 minute walk + bridge with your wheeled suitcases. If you don't think you can manage it, you can arrange for a water taxi.
You can use booking.com to find hotels that are available for your precise travel dates and match your budget + your requirements for ameneties (air con, wi-fi, whatever). You can read user reviews to find out if they really are okay hotels for your price.

(Apparently a lot of people like to make travel sound complicated because it gives them an opening to pretend "expertise." Everybody needs tips on which boat or bus to take, and where things are located, but honestly, millions of tourists -- literally millions -- arrive in Venice every year for one night or 2 nights, and the vast majority come away talking about what a great -- even perfect -- time they had, and they didn't have an insider or special knowledge. It's all right out there in the open, no "gurus" needed. Have a great time.

I think your best option, if money were no concern, is to find a hotel with a water door.
You can have your hotel arrange a private water taxi to whisk you right from the water door to the cruise ship.
An added benefit would be to a find a hotel with a water door right on the Grand Canal, allowing you to use the vaporetti whilst in town.
One such hotel is San Cassiano Ca Frevetto near the Rialto Market.
No elevator, however.
I do love the Zattere.

Joyce15, a little research on the internet will show there are plenty of people who go to Venice and hate their experience. If you don't do your research and prepare well, Venice can and will bite you in the arse.

LOL! Spoken like a true pretend expert. Sandy, do you own a mirror? Perhaps not, since you never wear make-up and/or comb your hair. I sincerely doubt you've ever been to Venice.

La Calcina is one of the best, most popular boutique hotels in Venice. The rooms with views are special. some rooms are dark with nothing to see out the window. There is no elevator. Three flights of stairs. They don't always have someone to help with luggage. Sometimes, it's a difficult place to get a room because many people return here and book specific rooms months in advance.

Our last two times in Venice we stayed at the Metropole. Pricey and not to everyone's taste but we loved it. Has a water door right into the lobby. Also near our favorite restaurant, Corte Sconta.
