Venice Hilton - Help
 

My wife and I are going to Venice in May 2008 and need some help with directions. Is it difficult to get from the Santa Lucia train station to the Hilton Stucky on Giudecca? Would it be better to get off at the Mestre station? Can you help with which water taxi to get on from which station?

Mike: it would NOT be better to go to the hotel from Mestre. It isn't very far at all from the Santa Lucia train station to the Hilton Mulino Stucky.

Doesn't the hotel's webpage have instructions on which vaporetto to take?

A taxi would be easy from the train station to the hotel, but I am sure it is easily accessible by vaporetto.

Ok, checked the website. The give no instructions from the train station. I think it would be best to email the hotel and ask. All the directions given are from Piazzale Roma, taking the 82 vaporetto to the S. Basilio stop, and then the hotels shuttle from there.

I do believe 82 will stop at the Santa Lucia train station in the direction of Giudecca.

But you need not get off the train in Mestre. If you do, you will still have to get to Venice, so take the train all the way to Venice.

The vaporetto to S. Basilio will stop near the train station. Or you can get a water taxi.

You need to study the Venice transport site. It is endlessly helpful, once you figure it out. You can get a timetable for the vaporetti, also very helpful.

Since you have chosen a slightly out of the way location, you owe it to yourself to really learn how to get around by vaporetti.

I also want to add this: I was doing some tour guiding in Venice last October, and as long as my clients were following me around, they were ok. But having not looked at a map, or spent any time figuring out the vaporetti, they were totally lost when on their own. They didn't enjoy not being able to get around easily.

We, on the other hand, having spent a little time figuring out which goes where, how to read the stops, figure out the directions, etc. got all over the place, all the time, with ease.

Even an hour spent studying the system will really pay off.

We stayed at the Venice Hilton in December. It's gorgeous and wonderful. Get a room with a view of the canal if you can. The hotel has a free shuttle to San Marco that runs every 40 minutes. Check their Web site; it also makes one other stop in Venice. You can take a vaporetto to San Marco and then take the shuttle.
