Venice - From Airport to Hotel

This will be our first trip to Venice. We will be arriving at night and not knowing our way around town, what would be the best form of transportation? Are there services that can pick you up and transport?

kappa Nov 9th, 2004 01:18 AM

There are mainly the following possibilities :
-Water taxi (approx.EUR 80)
-Alilaguna shuttle boat (app.EUR 11)
-Land Bus + water bus (the cheapest)

Which hotel will you be staying? That would help us to give you more precise advices.

-Water taxi (approx.EUR 80)
This is per boat.

-Alilaguna shuttle boat (app.EUR 11)
This is per person.

If you can possibly afford it, take the water taxi. It's a wonderful way to enter the city for the first time, and almost certainly the method that will get you closest to your hotel.

Normally I wouldn't suggest taking a water taxi. But at night, it is worth the extra cost, in my opinion. Good luck.

Water taxi is always the best way to enter Venice--though not the most inexpensive.

Hi laner,

Your hotel should give you directions using the land bus and vaporetto (water bus). You can then decide how you would like to go.

PS,

The land bus takes you to Piazzale Roma.

hi-- go to veniceforvisitors.com and look up transportation for any additional info you didn't get here.

Laner,

I don't mean to take over your post, I was just wondering if anyone knows what time the vaporetto starts running in the morning?

Our train leaves Venice at 6:32 am and I'm wondering if we'll be able to take the vaporetto or if we'll have to hire a water taxi. Thanks for the input.

We took the Alilaguna shuttle for 11E each. At the airport, you can buy tickets for the shuttle. However, I wish I had had more definite directions to our hotel from the San Marco Alilaguna shuttle stop. We wandered for a bit before asking for directions, when it was only a 5 minute walk!

The possibility of taking a land taxi from Venice airport is rarely mentioned. As you come out of the airport there are normal taxis waiting just to your left. One of these will take you to Piazzale Roma, from which you can take a vaporetto or a water taxi, or perhaps even walk.

We are planning on staying at Pensione La Calcina, if that helps.

Actually it does help. Some Alilaguna shuttle boats stop at Zattere from where La Calcina is 2 minutes walk. You should check that site Ira suggested. If this is your first time in Venice, however, you might prefer the most costly, the water taxi. You can ask your hotel la Calcina too. I remember when I asked them the way to the hotel (or without my asking?) they confirmed my reservation with a detailed info how to get there. That was 3 years ago.

Actually the calcina's site has a detailed explanation on this matter on the folllowing page. Have you checked it?
