Venice from a cruise ship
 

We have 2 days in Venice in Oct. We want to do our own thing and not be part of a cruise ship group.Can anyone recommend the best way to do this?

Simply walk into the central part of town, start at San Marcos square for example, have a map in hand, maybe you've consulted a guidebook the night before, and go exploring. Pick a couple things to see or do that specifically interest you.

Venice is not large geographically and it's easy to see the sites on your own. There are also good self-guided walking tours available (we had a small pamphlet that showed several, that we bought at home before our trip).

After the ship docks they will/should provide the passengers with a vaporetto to the Doges Palace and from there just start walking like Suze suggests.

I cannot comment on what your cruise ship "will" or "should" provide since I don't know which one it is but I would be prepared to provide everything for myself once you hit the dock. There may very well be a "port talk" prior to your arrival that might provide useful information.

You do NOT have to be part of any organized group to enjoy Venice. The advice above of having a good guidebook (which can include information you download about Venice from the internet for free) is excellent IMO. Pick some of the things that sound interesting.

You could also check out the ship's excursion offerings and then do the same things on your own and at your own pace.

IF your ship leaves after dark I would suggest you consider going to San Marco at that time/after the tourists have gone...when the place becomes truly magical.

In my opinion the best time to see Venice is early in the morning and the evening after the crowds have gone. Enjoy!
