Venice/Florence - walking times
 

Hi. We will be traveling to Rome/Florence and Venice for the first time next year. It is frequently mentioned that Florence and Venice are quite compact. My question is how long are walking times from say the Accademia to the Uffizi? Or from the other side of the Ponte Vecchio to the Duomo? I'm looking at a hotel in the Campo San Stefano area of Venice and am particularly interested to know how long a walk it would be from there to San Marco and the Rialto Bridge. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

The Florence distances are less than 10 minutes each. In Venice, the walk from San Marcio to Rialto Bridge is about 10-20 minutes.

Accademia Gallery to the Uffizi is less than 15 minutes; my best guess is 10, although I don't recall. It isn't far at any rate. From the far side of the Ponte Vecchio to the Duomo is about 10 minutes.

In Venice---Even with a lot of tourists in your way, you will easily be able to walk from Campo San Stefano to either Piazza San Marco or the Rialto bridge in 10 minutes or less.

I think these times are accurate for experienced visitors. However, it is easy to lose your way, particularly in Venice, where there are many dead ends.

We were pleasanty surprised, on our recent visit to both cities, at how close everything was in comparison to how things looked on the maps.

We also never really had a problem with getting lost in either city, as sights and landmarks are very well marked for tourists.

Thank you very much for your replies. They are most helpful. In Rome we are staying near Piazza Novano, in Florence probably near the Duomo (although I was also considering the Oltrarno area) and in Venice perhaps near Campo San Stefano or the Rialto Bridge. It sounds like we should be able to walk everywhere quite easily. Does anyone know how active these areas are at night. For example, in DC we stay in Dupont - love the neighborhood feel and all the open restaurants and activity in the evening. I know the Piazza Navona area should be pretty active, but how about the areas around the Duomo and Campo San Stefano? Thanks again for all your help.

We just returned from Florence (stayed on Borgo San Lorenzo between the Duomo and San Lorenzo Church) and felt the area was perfect. Plenty of activity and close to all the major sights. We felt very safe there both day and night. Personally, I wouldn't care to stay on the other side of the Arno, but I know some people do.

In Venice, we stayed in Campo San Aponal very near the Rialto Bridge (San Sylvestro vaporetto stop) and again felt it was the perfect area. Close to the sights, yet not in the middle of the action. It was an easy walk to San Marco and most of the other major attractions, yet we were in a small local area at night. We also felt very safe in this area, as well.

I think the locations you have chosen will be fine, and yes, will enable you to get to the sights very easily. Both areas are safe at night.
