Venice /Florence
 

We are returning to Italy after last year's successful trip to Rome and Positano! This year our sights are on Venice and Florence.

Looks like we'll fly into Milan or Rome in late June, then train from there or ?? Any suggestions for stitching these cities together and other related itineraries? We have 8 days and love what we've seen of Italy so far: art, history, food, culture. Not big on shopping. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you only have eight days to split between Florence and Venice, can you fly directly into Florence, train to Venice, then fly out of Venice? This is what my DH and I did in the summer of 2004.

By all means, unless you have reason to be in Milan, try for an "open jaw" flight into Florence and out of Venice or vice versa.

MY first trip to Italy (from the USA) was a flight into Venice, and a flight home from Florence with a change of planes in Rome. From Venice to Florence I took the train.

I had 5 days in Florence on that occasion and one day was spent in a daytrip to Siena. I am a museum glutton, so at the time I wished I'd had one more day in Florence, a whole week would have allowed more time in Tuscany that trip.

FIrst visit to Venice was 5 days, just barely enough because I fell in love with the city.

Thank you all for your suggestions and trip reports. If you fly into one city and out another (training in between) does that cause a security alert and the associated delays,etc.?
