Venice - Floods?
 

Anyone been to Venice these days? Or do you know anything about the recent flood situation? Do you know where to find news? <BR>Thanks for info or links. <BR> <BR>-H

Piazza San Marco is flooding during about 3 hours just about every morning. This is normal! <BR> <BR>If you wish, you may keep track of the short term tide forecasts at <BR>http://www.comune.venezia.it/maree/prev.asp?F=page_b <BR> <BR>Piazza San Marco, one of the lowest parts in Venice, starts flooding when the tide level reaches 70cm. <BR> <BR>If you understand a bit of Italian, you may give the local online news a try: <BR>http://www.nuovavenezia.kataweb.it/ <BR> <BR>If you do so, you'll learn that on Friday the normal flooding was a piece of cake when compared to the 10-hour strike in the vaporetto transportation system! <BR> <BR>Paulo <BR>

Venice is one of my favorite cities. My husband and I are considering traveling there at the end of Sept. Regarding the "normal flooding" that has been mentioned does this occur year round or is it seasonal?<BR>Thanks,<BR>Eileen

How high does the water get in Marco Square during Aqua Alta? We are staying around the corner at the Savoia & Jolanda. I realize there are raised walking paths but if we get off these paths, how high a water might we expect?

Good afternoon, H.<BR>Was in Venice on Monday,Nov. 6, 2000.<BR>When that afternoon the sirens began to<BR>wail about three o'clock and the waters<BR>began to rise in the Pza S. Marco. Having been thru some of the morning <BR>floods, where most places were still<BR>walkable on dry land, and in other places the plank walks were in place.<BR>However, the tide along with the wind<BR>direction blowing at this time caused<BR>extremely high water. It was about a<BR>meter in the Pza S. Marco, our hotel<BR>the Saturnia had about six inches of<BR>water in the lobby and its ristorante<BR>the LaCaravella was closed down, stores<BR>also closed early. We purchased<BR>rubber boots which allowed walking,<BR>except in the center of the Pza S. Marco<BR>People were using plastic bags on their<BR>feet, some barefooted... Most ristorantes closed and we retired to<BR>the room to live off of the frigo bar.<BR>However we got a call from the LaCaravella that to be down in the hotels breakfast room at 9pm and a <BR>meal would be served.
