SusanEva:

I stand - or, as it happens, sit - corrected on the formal name of the church of the Gesuiti. But I'm willing to bet that if you asked for Santa Maria Assunta in Venice, 99% of the Venetians would tell you it's on Torcello.

But there is only one church of the Gesuiti in Venice. I suspect that you are confusing Gesuiti and GesuAti, a totally different order, which was actually surpressed, although the church kept its name after it was taken over by the Dominicans. The church of the Gesuati (formal name: Santa Maria del Rosario, which I daresay most Venetians don't know either) is on Fondamente delle Zattere in Dorsoduro.

Hi Eloise,

Lol, it's clear we both love churches. Thanks for your clarifying info as well. It would be a pleasure to travel together some time to admire these beauties and others!

Cato's already promised to take me in her pocket on this trip as she checks out all these great suggestions in Florence and Venice. Maybe she has room for two? S.

I Just returned from Venice. I visited a lot of churches. My favourite (apart from San Marco) was TORCELLO's Bizantine church of Sta. Maria Assunta with the small and beautiful Santa Fosca just by its side. Two tips there: 1- Don't forget to pick the Audioguide. It's just 1 euro and the description of the main mossaic about the last judgement it has is one of the best descriptions I've ever heard.
2-Climb the campanile. The view of the lagoon is beautiful and you can see how Venice Islands were before they were constructed.
My second choice will be San Giorgio Maggiore. The chorus is very nice AND the view of Venice from it's Campanile is even better that the view from San Marcos campanile (and with a tenth of the people).

Cato - I would urge you to either buy or browse Fodor's City Pack series entitled "Venice's Best". Many of their so-called "best" are that city's beautiful churches in part because that is where many of the great art works are located. The book has a nice description of each church's highlights along with some pictures. The book also has walking tours which take you past those churches. We spent an entire afternoon (and then some) meandering around Venice going in and out of the churches.

As you may know, there is a pass you can buy which will give you admittance to most of the churches. You can buy one at participating churches. Most churches charge an admittance fee. If you're going into a lot of them, it makes sense to buy one because the modest fees quickly add up, as we found out the hard way. Enjoy!! Dave
