Venice experts - restaurant advice please

I'm looking for some dining recommendations in the San Marco area of Venice. Price not an issue; good food is! We will be there in January so sadly outdoors will not be an option.

Thanks

Our favorite in Venice is Alle Testiere, an easy walk from San Marco. It is located at Calle Mundo Novo, 5801, Phone: 522-7220. The restaurant is small and has two seatings at 7 and 9. Advance reservations are a must. The seafood is delicious and innovative. Everything we ate was wonderful. It is on the pricy side but well worth it.

Venice is small, so I don't limit my restaurants to San Marco even tho' that's where I stay.
Anyway, my recommendations are
Da Raffaele, Antico Martini, and the restaurant of the Cipriani hotel (a 5-minute boat ride from San Marco).
If you're willing to farther away, most people agree that Da Fiore is the best restaurant in Venice (and one of the best anywhere)
I have a long file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me at

Just realized, 'January'
Not sure if the Cipriani is open for guests or for dinner in January

I second Mamc's recommendatin of Alle Testiere! It is excellent, excellent, excellent.

Go for the 9PM seating and eat like the locals. Great food and atmosphere.

Enjoy magical Venice.

If price is not an issue - Da Fiore. Around San Marco is Acqua Pazza - (we had a wonderful outdoor lunch there in January) & Olivia Nero. Poste Vecci at Rialto is also a favorite of ours.

I second the recommendation of Acqua Pazza (S. Marco, 3808/10 Campo S. Angelo). We had an incredible lunch there in March. Order their house antipasti. A wonderful dish with many different kinds of seafood.

Also their sister restaurant Masaniello (S. Marco 2801 Campo S. Stefano) is excellent as well.

How much is Da Fiore running these days? About 100 euros without wine?

elaine Jul 29th, 2005 05:14 AM

Three years ago, I recall that our meal for two came out at about $350, with a modest (for them) bottle of wine. Even taking away as much as $75 for the wine but adding in the decline of the dollar, it's a very pricey place, but in our opinion (we are foodies) it was worth it.

Thanks.

That is pricey.

The website says expect to spend 95 euros. Anyway, I've made my reservation for a Saturday dinner. I'll see if I change my mind later. It'll be a bit of a hassle, as I'm not expecting to get into Venice until 9:30 or so, and the last seating is at 10.

Maybe I'll get a glass of wine (I'll be alone), but if I'm feeling cheap, I'll skip it.

In the meantime, I'll obviously be checking Venice restaurant recommedations. I've not done much in that department, and this thread is useful.

If you have any interest in seeing my address above.
Not all my Venice suggestions or enjoyments are expensive. :)

oops, even with editing, my posts are showing up poorly

I meant to say, if you have any interest in seeing my Venice file, feel free to email

Thanks. I just sent you an e-mail. Incidentally it wouldn't hurt getting the Paris one either.

I hope I can now receive them -- recall some snags with the Paris one as hotmail has a very small quota back then.

Thanks again.

I think you know Paris very well, but will be happy to try sending the file

Actually I wouldn't say "very well," but I was amused the other day when I decided that I've spent more time in Paris than Brooklyn (or failing that, gone to Paris more than I've been to Brooklyn).

The Venice file just came in. Thanks -- I'm looking at it.

Wouldn't mind the one on Florence/Siena also.

Thanks again!
