Venice - enough to warrant a 7 day stay???
I am thinking of getting an apt but min stay is 7 days. Is there enough to warrant that length of stay? If so, what might a suggested itinerary look like? Also, is it worth it to pay to stay on the Grand canal or maybe just be near St. Marco Square?

Hi G,
Over the years we have stayed in Venice more than 3 weeks. There is plenty to do. >..is it worth it to pay to stay on the Grand canal or maybe just be near St. Marco Square?< I wouldn't do either, but I tend to sleep cheap and eat well. ((I)) |
You bet Venezia is worth a 7 day stay. It's more worth a 7 day stay than it is a 2 or 3 day stay.
Money aside, you should look into staying in a quieter, less touristy area of Venezia than those you've mentioned. Venezia is very small and absolutely safe, so anywhere you stay will be convenient to the sights and a wide variety of restaurants. The area known as the Dorsoduro is particularly attractive, I think. For a 7 day stay, consder renting an apartment. Look at the Slow Travel website to see how easy it is and for recommendations for where to rent from other people who have done it. |
After a few three night stays in Venice, we opted for a week long apartment rental, and did that for a second time last month. There is plenty to do. Possible day trips: Boat trip on the Brenta Canal, visiting the villas. Verona Padua Chioggia Bassano del Grappa Asolo Ravenna Trieste And that's only if you run out of things to do in Venice. |
Yes--we have done that. I like the concept of apts. in cities.
|
I agree with the others. When I first went to Venice, I thught I had done everything after 3 days. After 7 days there was so much more I wanted to do. The city really did grow on me.

You can stay on the Grand Canal at the Accademia Bridge very reasonably at the Accademia Hotel. It is a B&B and the large room has huge windows that open on to the Grand Canal where you can have breakfast and watch the gondolas. It is Great !! I will post their web site as soon as I find it because I think there are 2 Hotel Accademias. The one we stayed at is in Dorsoduro and a great location.

I gave you the wrong name, I am sorry. It is the Hotel Galleria and the room we stayed in is now 155 Euros but the others are 110. Here is the website:

So Neo, how was that apartment afterall?
|
YES there is plenty to do & see, including walking, riding the boats, dining, seeing architecture, etc. etc.
Just spent a week and going back for 4 more days. |
Yes, I am definitely doing the apt/dwelling thing... Im trying to decide out of these four...what do you all think? I was thinking it would be nice to stay on the canal..and have the terrace but i love the interior of the 1st one and the last one....??

I mean the 1st and the 3rd one..I love those interiors best but I was thinking maybe it be exciting to choose the one on the canal..although one of you said I shouldnt stay on the canal..maybe a wk of it would be too much??
|
YES there is plenty to do in Venice for 7 days! It will take at least 3-4 days to do the usual tourist things. Then you can explore other neighborhoods and districts, take a boat out to the Lido, Murano, Burano, et al. I'm not an itinerary maker myself so can't help you there, but have spent 5 days on 2 occasions in the city and barely scratched the surface.
For me, no I would not stay on the Grand Canal or by San Marcos. I like the Dosoduro area or somewhere else more tucked away from all the hussle and bussle to relax at the end of a day. |
Those are some very nice apartments, but I want you to look at the second one again. Study the view from that balcony. Look me in the eye and say with a straight face, "maybe a week of that view would be too much." You've got to be kidding.
If you rent that "over the top" decorated first one with three bedrooms, I'm wondering which of us you're inviting to come share the place with you? |
Well now I dont' know if we should stay ON canal or off & I thought if I was not at St Marco but off a bit that would be good. What about any of these? As you stated Dorsoduro..here's two there..but do is that close enough to San Marco to walk etc? Although these certainly aren't as spectacular as the Canal one and that lovely interiors one... ??? Don't know what to do?

San Marco area http://www.venice-rentals.com/venice/v87.shtml |
Regarding that last one. . .
I'm all for "elegantly carpeted stairs", but not four flights of them every time I want to come or go. |
I will be going to Venice next April. I was thinking of staying in San Marcos so I could be close to San Marco Square because in the evenings I wanted to walk over and listen to the music. Here is my question, if I stay in Dosoduro are there vaporettos going back and forth from Dosoduro to San Marco late at night? Any feedback on the Hotel in Dosoduro La Cachina? I have checked their website and I'm impressed with it. Thanks

I think #2 is the best choice. Right on the Grand Canal, a terrific view, and in a great area. You will be so happy, so happy with this apartment.
|
I meant #2 of your first list of choices. It's in Dorsoduro and just across the canal from San Marco. A perfect location. I really don't think you can do better. I suggest you book it now before it's gone.
|
For Madison- Pensione La Calcina is wonderful, I've stayed there twice. You don't need a vaporetto (except to get to and from the train station) it's maybe a 10-15 mins. walk over the L'Accademia bridge to San Marcos square. It is an excellent hotel, but deservedly very popular so book asap if you are really interested.
