Venice day trip to Bologna

We are going to be in Venice in October for 6 days and I would love to spend a day in Bologna. It appears to be about a 2 hour trip one way. Can anyone make any suggestions for Bologna in a day or suggest a good guidebook covering it? Is this a crazy idea?

Ira thanks, you sealed it-we're definately going- I can almost taste that taglitelli! It sounds like you were there the same time of year we will be.

Hi swalter, get to Bologna as early as you can. I agree with Ira, Bologna is a beautiful city. I think you will really enjoy. Fantastic food too!

Thanks for the encouragement LoveItaly, we're definately going. Is one day of the week better or worse than others?

Hi swalter, probably skipping Sunday is better in case some of the shops are closed. Even if you do not want to shop walking down the arcades is a wonderful experience.

I would go any other day. On Saturday you would might have the various bands playing on street corners which is fun. Young people and even the elderly citizens of Bologna sort of bouncing along to the music as they walk about doing their errands etc. Too precious. Bologna is quite an university city as I am sure you know so there are lots of young people. Bologna is dignified but vibrant.

I have to reread Ira's report but I am sure he has a wealth of information in it as he is always so good at sharing his knowledge.

Do be sure to see the two dramatic towers (Torri). Bologna is a very walkable city and I have found the people warm and hospitable. Enjoy every moment. At let us know your impressions of Bologna! Best wishes.
