"Mom, that's a senseless waste of good wine money."

You raised her well!

Thank you, Alessandra!

I am going to spring for a private water taxi on the return to the airport. The hotel, the Al Ponte Antico, is on the Grand Canal and has a dock. Flight is at 6:40 AM so this is not the time to screw around.

I think you have the right idea, weekender. The return trip vaporetto end is what sort of kills you--one must get to the Piazzale Roma first in slo-mo via vaporetto to catch the bus. When you arrive, it's all new and part of the fun.

Luckily, we had time to spare and enjoyed our prolonged water "good-bye" to Venice via Grand Canal.

Dayenu: You are more than welcome. I want to assure you that getting on the bus at the airport really wasn't daunting. The two most confusing parts of the trip for us were 1) getting off the bus/getting on to our first vaporetto and 2) then finding our return airport bus day of departure. Hence my note: See where the darn bus is when you get off, and if it moves, note where it moves to.

I just found a diagram of all the bus parking at Piazzale Roma which is BARELY helpful when trying to get back (07_piazzale_roma_bus_parking_diagram_strip_175_pb 081398.jpg).The vaporetto location would be on the bottom right-ish, off this diagram.

quinnsmom: Thank you. I had assistance from my sister. Even though we grew up in a teetotaler family, little sis used her first babysitting money to buy herself a wine glass (!) from which she insisted drinking her evening milk. I am thankful she never bought the kids some sort of wine sippy cup.

on our last visit to Venice, we took the same oh so slow vaporetto up the grand canal back to the piazzale roma, the tears coursing down my cheeks. To this day I am not sure why it hit me like that, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
