Venice Carnevale

Can anyone tell me about this event and what Venice is really like during the celebration?
Is the last day the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday the best day to attend? Are prices outrageous during the event and what is the weather like? Thanks.

Just wanted to say, it must be a magical time in Venice from what I've read.

Carnevale, the "farewell to meat", originated centuries ago. This 2 month long party made it possible to cope with the austerity of Lent. This and the ability to melt into the social class just by wearing a mask! It is expensive during this time and most hotels are booked well in advance. The last day ends with fireworks and dancing on St. Mark's Square. The weather is chilly. Post in Feb. and tell us your story! Have a great time!

Very cold! Very crowded, sometimes you get stucked in the alleys with no possibility of going forward or backward a very claustrophobic & frightening situation so if your hotel is far, you have to struggle to get your way. Also the vaporreto (the bus boat) will have enormus lines so it's either stand in line & push or push your way by foot. It is magical after all. The people in costumes are beautiful so bring a lot of film. If you ask my hubby, he didn't like the mass of people everywhere.
If you decide to go, book well in advance, better go with friends & bring your own costumes. If you can afford it book a place in one of the many balls (a costum is a must!).
Meira

Was in Venice for Carnevale in 2000. Above posting is correct. Hordes of people, incredible congestion, terrible weather. Wonderful!
