Venice car return: downtown or rail station?

We are returning an Autoeurope rental to Venice and I need help choosing a return spot: Mestre Railstation or Downtown Piazzale Roma?
The guy at Autoeurope just proved himself useless on the phone so I thought I would ask the experts for help! Quite hilarious, he proceeded to tell me that since Venice is underwater he wouldn't recommend the downtown location!!!
Thanks

Depends when you are going to be there. He's referring to Acqua Alta which typically occurs in the fall, I believe. Others here will have more info or you can google it.

The year that I was in Venice was during late September, didn't experience Acqua Alta.

Depends what you want to do.

If you're visiting Venice, P Roma. If you're catching a train to elsewhere in Italy, Mestre.

P Roma isn't "downtown" and isn't subject to acqua alta.

I think we all think "downtown" is such a crazy name for anywhere in Venice
