Venice- Car pick up
We will be picking up a car after staying in Venice - we are staying near the grand Canal area.
Where is it easier to pick up a car- Venice Train station or Venice airport? Thanks Michele |
The airport is too far and will be expensive to reach. Car rentals in Venice take place at Piazzale Roma. This isn't far from the train station, but the station itself opens on the Grand Canal, not on to land.
Everything in Venice is "the Grand Canal area" as the Grand Canal snakes through the entire city. Do you have a more exact location? But it really doesn't matter. Don't rent at the airport. Rent at Pzle. Roma. |
The location listed at the car rental site is the train station- is that the Piazzale Roma? Would we take train or water taxi to reach it?OUr hotel is located on riva degli schiavoni- hotel Savoia e Jolanda

Michel--
Train station is Piazzole Roma. Take the vaporetto from San Zaccaria or Arsenale, whichever is closest. |
Actually, it is the stop just after the train station--not the same.
|
The train station IN Venice is Santa Lucia Station.
The train station is NOT in Piazzale Roma. Santa Lucia Station is on the other side of the Calatrava Bridge from Piazzale Roma. You can take Vap.#1 from San Zaccaria Danieli to P. Roma. Your hotel is in right in the center of the Tsunami Highway of Tourists, by the way. I am not exaggerating when I write that the area around your hotel will be so packed with tourists that it will resemble Rockefeller Center on the night the Christmas Tree is lit. Thin |
yes, he IS exaggerating, but not much.
in any event, when it's time to leave, you will need to get a Vaporetto no 1 [or 2 if it stops at your stop] to Piazzale Rome, where you will find the car hire offices. it will make more sense when you get there, particularly if you are arriving by air, and get the bus to Venice, which stops in Piazzale Roma. There you can get a vaporetto to the stop nearest your hotel. you just repeat the process when it's time to leave. |
Technically, your hotel is not on the Grand Canal but San Mark's Basin.
The No.2 vaporetto goes two ways from your San Zaccaria stop. One route is up the Grand Canal (with fewer stops than the No.1 vaporetto,) and the other way is in the opposite direction along Giudecca, Tronchetto and the Piazzale Roma. The second route is quicker but not so scenic. Check out the vaporetto stops when you arrive. To escape the tourist melee, go up one of the small alleyways to the side of your hotel, away from the Riva. |
When are you picking up your car, and what kind of car?
If on weekend, the airport sites have longer office hours and more choices on the smaller end of automatic cars, if that is a requirement for you. |
I have a vaporetto map of Venice and it does NOT show #2 stopping at San Zaccaria Danieli.
It does show #2 stopping at San Marco Vallaresso and Monumento. Thin |
