Venice budget hotels? Paris, centrally located hotels?

Hi folks,
Scrambling a bit here. I have hostel reservations in both places and they MAY work out. But just in case, I'm trying to find reasonable alternatives.. I was hit by a car early today and while I'm not badly off, I think I may have injured at least one appendage badly enough that climbing a bunk bed is probably not in the cards.

Any ideas for centrally located, clean, and pleasant lodging in both places? Shared bathroom is just fine, obviously. Hopeful budget is less than 100 euros/nt- realistic estimate is 130. Venice is over Christmas (I know, I know, not holding my breath.) Paris is second week of January.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

If you want to stay in the same area as the hostel in Paris, I mentioned this hotel. No elevator, but everything else you need, clean, comfortable and cheap.

Have been productive. Paris looks like it'll work out, whew!

Venice options so far:

Hotel Becher, 119 nonrefundable, 133 refundable

Hotel Colombina-
(Annex, nonrefundable) 119/nt
(Palazzo) 130/nt.

If anyone has experience with either place...pros/cons? Worth the money? I usually do not book non refundable but I figure at this point it's Venice or bust:)

We have stayed at this budget hotel in Venice and enjoyed it.

Thank you, Jamikins! I've sent an inquiry, and am keeping fingers crossed:)

We are booked for 5 nights over Christmas at http://www.cadelnobile.com for 110€ per night for a double. BUT we booked months ago, it's a 5-night stay, and we get a 10% discount from Booking.com. Still, worth a try. Good luck!

marvelousmouse Nov 23rd, 2016 01:12 AM

It looks lovely, stcirq, but unfortunately their availibility would mean a split stay. Enjoy, though! I do hope you post a trip report- I may have to add that to my "if I ever return to Venice" list.

Does anyone have experience with al codega hotel? Refundable at 110 euro/nt, which makes it tempting.

I thought Hotel Mignon was perfectly fine, although my single room was tiny. Very nice staff. But only non-refundable for next month:

Cannaregio, to me, is central enough in Venice.

Next year I'm staying at Astotel Astoria in Paris, got it for 83E including breakfast, a great price for high season in Paris. They have more hotels on their site, which is where I booked my stay. Again, perfectly central for me.

I stayed before at France Albion and they, too, have good prices. Great location in the 9th.

FWIW, Many hotels in Venice apply lower/low season rates before/during Christmas time. After Christmas, the rates get higher and highest for the night of New Years Eve. Taking advantage of that, I have passed many Christmas in Venice. On the contrary, I had New Year's Eve there only once. There was less choice of rooms with location of my preference and for a price that I was willing to pay.

A few weeks ago we spent a couple of nights at the Hôtel Gabriel in the 11th in Paris, which we thought was delightful, though of course the rooms were small (really small). We paid 50 € a night on Booking.com and were astounded to note upon arriving that the rate sheet posted on the door quoted 300€ a night for the same room. Again, might be looking into. It was a great neighborhood!

I should have mentioned, for this Christmas, I booked Centauro 3*, located between Rialto and San Marco and next to the hotel is Plazzo Bovolo (spl?), just off the Campo Manin in a very narrow alley. Stayed there already another Christmas about 10 years ago so I know what I'm getting this time. Tiny but clean room. Their breakfast room is large that I like ( many 3* hotels in Venice have a small, crumpy one) with high ceiling, with a balcony where you can get out for a view. I paid 10 yedars ago, I thought very good, less than €50.00 per night. This time booked my room even less, ridiculously low €35.00 per night, breakfast included. I hope there will be no trap for such a low rate but the photo shows the same type of room I had. The only difference is, 10 years ago, my room came with a private shower just outside the room. Only I had the key. This time, the offer for €35.00 is with shared shower, I saw that and thought it would be ok too. The bookkig site did not give me option for a room with private shower. After shared bath, the rates got a lot higher, over €80.00 per night.

I usually book with booking.com these days but this time, their offer started from €80.0 or so with private bathroom. I used to use venere.com before I completely switched to booking.com. Now I thought venere was Italian ( at least originally ) so maybe they had better offers for Venice? I don't know if it is because of that but looking at vevere I found above €35.00 room with shared bathroom. I thought I should mention this because you say yon don't mind shared bath.

<<We paid 50 € a night on Booking.com and were astounded to note upon arriving that the rate sheet posted on the door quoted 300€ a night for the same room>>

A lot of Parisian hotels post rates on the door that are complete fantasy. That is only a 3* hotel and no room every goes for 300 euro, even the most superior one, which I think is only around 200-225 euro in peak periods. Its normal rates would be more around 100-125 euro for a small room, though, so may be more than the OP wants to spend, although booking.com is worth checking out. But it should be real easy to get a hotel cheaper than that the second week in January in central Paris.

This one is hostel like in the Latin Qtr and has rooms less than 100 euro. http://commerceparishotel.com/

This one is in the Marais, if you want that, and it has singles and doubles less than 100 euro

This 3* hotel in the Latin Qtr has singles at 99 euro if you prepay http://www.paris-hotel-stjacques.com/en/

if you are still looking for Venice, I have stayed at Hotel Riva and enjoyed it. Not sure why it is listed at 1 star...excellent location, some canal view rooms, liked everything about it.

I spent several nights in the 18th for less than 50 euros. Very clean large rooms. Perfectly ok. Looks run down from outside but I don't sleep outside.
Not center.
Lots of hotels post high rates and you pay it if you just walk in or have no choice. Which happened.
However since the attacks I have never had a problem to find a room anymore.
Yesterday price was 330 on the menu and I paid 140.

Ended up booking al codega with the refundable rate. May still browse a bit, but I'm fairly happy with the location, breakfast and reviews. I was going to get a water bus pass because of my hostel's location, but the hotel makes that unnecessary. Is it a good idea to still get the pass or will walking be sufficient to in terms of exploring?

And MIJE kindly reserved me a bottom bunk, so Paris is taken care of. Thanks, everyone!

fuzzbucket Nov 23rd, 2016 10:47 PM

I'd walk most of the time in Venice. You'll miss a lot if you take the water taxis all the time.
Once in awhile, to get to "the other side" or to an island like Burano, it's fine, though. I can't remember the prices for the pass - might cost it out against a single round trip ticket.

marvelousmouse Nov 23rd, 2016 11:06 PM

Fuzzbucket- thanks. I did price it out and I would have only saved money if I had stayed at the hostel. I really enjoy walking- I just wondered if I would be missing an important aspect of Venice if I did not use the water buses frequently.

The Domus Ciliota in Venice is cheap and very well located.

Here is a very nice cheap, and well-located, hotel in Paris. The single rooms with shared bath are only 50-something euros a night.

http://www.port-royal-hotel.fr/

We loved the neighborhood, on the southern edge of the 5th. It's not far from the Jardin des Plantes, or the Luxembourg Gardens, and it's also a fairly easy walk to Notre Dame and other places on the other bank of the Seine.

fuzzbucket Nov 24th, 2016 10:37 PM

Using the water taxis is a faster method of getting from Point A to Point B in Venice. If you don't have much time to spend there, you should probably get the pass.
Venice is very confusing - there aren't "regular" addresses, as we know them, so using a water taxi near a museum or attraction would be convenient.
Make sure to get a good map.
