Venice Biennale Brouhaha Over Mosque...
set up by the Icelandic entry to the bi-annual Venice Biennale - a former church - now privately owned has been converted to a real if temporary mosque - in today's NYTimes an article said the city was thinking of taking steps to shut the display and mosque down.
IMO tolerance should rule along with artistic integrity - the Biennale has traditionally been at the cutting edge of offending folks, like the Vatican and the Pope in past satirical bases entries - I really can't believe the knee-jerk reaction of some. What do you think? The Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/07/ar...ance.html?_r=0 |

Close to the former Misericordia church is Campo dei Mori with it elegant statues of turbaned Moors.
I wonder if the outrage is because the mosque is very close to the Jewish ghetto? Thin |

Naw I think it is more blatant anti-Moslem - who like Pepper says have a long history in the development of Venice and now are shunned and prevented from even temporarily having their own place of worship. I am a complete atheist but I abhor religious intolerance of any kind. Hats off to Iceland for pushing the envelope - that is the spirit of the Biennale as I know it - always pushing the limit it seems. WWJD? |
I prefer WWJAD?
