Venice, beautiful Venice

I wish I was in Venice right now. I don't care if it is under water!

I read tripadvisor, Venice forum. According to a Venetian local poster, the water of acqua alta is from the drains (it looks to me too ) so the sight of those people gives her shivers and that's simple a stupid thing to do. Even walking bare foot in the water is Aghhh ...,

Extraordinary sight.

I love Venice but I'd find this flooding far too daunting. Pluck can only go so far.

Interesting video showing in the background the passing of a huge cruise ship. These ocean monsters create wakes that help to contribute to the slow and steady destruction of the city.

Surely hope this gets addressed. They've been squabbling for years about how to keep Mother Nature at bay.

"Surely hope this gets addressed." The MOSE project is supposed to be completed in 2015 (delayed from the original 2014 estimate).

"Hope it recedes. I'll be there in two weeks." The flooding is both tidal and weather-related. The moon will be full on Nov. 28th, so there could be flooding again around that date esp. if there is heavy rain and wind.

BTW, there has been flooding in several other places in northern and central Italy over the last couple of days.

Lourdi, it seems the Nov 28 is full moon and acqua alta is likely to occur around that time - no garantee though. Where will you be staying? Piazza San Marco is the place that's affected first when other parts are dry. I will be there from Dec 1st for 5 days. I have a slight concern or more like feel annoyed with these news of recent but I have experienced various degrees of acqua alta in the past including one that was quite good ( = bad) one so when it happens, I think I know what to do and not to do. The thing I know I will NOT to do is walking barefoot or swimming in that drain water. My hotel is in Dorsoduro and should be a little less affected. What I know I will do : WIll go to Piazza San Marco and see it under water. I havbe done it but will be a great sight to see again. Also it was nice to see the Piazza under this condition from above, the campanille. Careful, as you get closer to P.San Marco, the water gets deeper, a lot deeper.

Hi Kappa,

We're gonna be in Venice the 24th-26th in Cannaregio (by Cå D'Oro). Maybe it won't be so bad up there?? Its our first trip ever so we're a little concerned because we're gonna be with our kids (11 & 15). Hopefully the weather & the tide take pity on us during that weekend...

On our visit to Venice in October last year, there was minor flooding one morning at Ca d'Oro.

Here's a map showing where the raised walkways are placed:

Hi Lourdi, in December 2005, I stayed at Foscari Palace that was 1 minutes walk from Ca d'Doro stop, when one morning I had my worst (best - great photos chances) acqua alta. It was 120cm so quite high ( but note it never means the water is as deep as that even at the lowest part of Venice - San Marco). In front of my hotel at Campo Santa Sofia ( there is tragehtto stop and the fish market on the other side),there was a large shallow pool of water, that was ok with normal short rain boots. I bought a pair of plastic knee-high overshoes at one of the many shops on the main street, Strada Nova and started my walking trip toward Piazza San Marco. The water got deeper and deeper as I wrote above and it got about 50-60 cm deep ( that's about what you get at the lowest part of Venice when acqua alta is "120cm" high). Personally I think your kids will get a kick out of it ( I did!). Caneregio is a large district so without too generalizing, the water will not nearly as deep where you will be, if it does happen. I have been to Venice many times including NOV - DEC, when it is likely to happen more often than other times. I do feel annoyed a bit now with all these news, especially because i will be accompanied by a friend who has never been to the city. I'm hoping the best for him but at the worst case, he will be with me who has experiences with acqua alta and kind of know what to do.

Thanks Kappa, Yeah I'm sure my kids will enjoy it. Although I don't think I'll allow them to swim in it since its mainly drain water! What can we do? We'll just have to wear boots (or bags) and make the best of it as the natives do! =)
