Venice at Christmas

Hello

We are first time travelers to Venice arriving Dec 24.. We are renting an apartment and I'm wondering how late grocery stores and bakeries will be open on the 24th and if any will be open on the 25th. Our flight into Marco Polo around close to noon and I'm guessing we won't be at our place until 1:00 pm.

Thank you!

Depending on whether you do carryon only, how you travel from the airport and where the apartment is, I wouldn't count on getting to your rental by 1:00p, esp. if your flight is delayed for any reason (like weather). The airport and services are probably going to be busy. I assume you will need to meet someone to get the keys and any instructions for the apartment.

I would ask the owners or agents of the rental where and how late you will be able to shop on the 24th and what, if anything, will be open on the 25th. They would know the apartment's neighborhood.

Where is the apartment -- w/ a noon arrival it is very unlikely you will be there by 1PM. Especially if you take the Alilaguna - heck the walk to the dock alone will take 10 - 15 minutes w/ luggage.

You might ask the owner/manager of the apartment to stock the kitchen w/ provisions -- many will for a small add'l fee.

I would do as janisj suggests: ask the owners/agency to stock the kitchen. I would also have dinner reservations for the 24th and 25th.

FWIW, my experience is that practically everything - apart from many bars and restaurants - is closed by 6 on the 24th, and pretty much only bars and restaurants (though far from all of them) are open on the 25th.

Thank you all!

If you are going to eat out on the 24th, it is imperative that you make reservations. Two years ago we dined at Cafe Landtmann on Christmas Eve and they turned away people without reservations. What surprised me was the number of places closed on the 26th. Have a great trip.

I arrived in Venice yesterday, around 13:30. From touching down to being outside the terminal (immigration and baggage claim) was almost an hour.
