Thanks for the advice, everyone. It looks like walking to Piazzale Roma to catch the airport bus may be possible, but it's a good idea to check it out the day before for timing. On arrival, coming from the train station, it looks like we need to get across the Grand Canal, but San Toma seems to be on the other side of the San Polo area from where we are staying. Is that where you have to go to get transportation to the interior areas? We have to call the people we're renting the apartment from when we get there, so they will probably tell us what to do. I was just trying to get some plans together beforehand. I have to get some maps before we leave. I have a lot to do in 16 days!

Yes, you're going to take No. 1 to San Toma. You can probably walk from there, maybe the equivalent of three NYC blocks? It looks like you have a pretty straight shot along Campo San Rocco. There may be some small bridges to cross.
I found this site useful. It's an apartment rental site, but has a lot of useful information. Here's a map of the vaporetto routes. http://tinyurl.com/2wxrpl Now look at the list on the left. Click on "Interactive map". It's a touchy map; click slowly as you go through it. On the map page, right side, you'll see a list: click Piazzale Roma...the map will move there. Now. Click 2 times on the RIGHT arrow: your location will be centered on the map. (Are you on Calle de la Fondaria?) If you twice on the arrow in the lower RIGHT CORNER, you'll be at San Toma vaporetto stop. Now you can work your way back up, tracing the route you'll take. ------------- This is another map with map, satellite, and hybrid view. http://tinyurl.com/3r7ra6 |
Thanks for the info. Those maps are better than what I have. I emailed my apartment company for the street name and address, but they haven't replied (which makes me a little nervous). At least I have an idea of what to do when I get there, and hopefully they will have directions when we call.
