Venice Airport to Train Station

Any suggestions on the cheapest but not terribly inconvenient way to get from Venice airport to the main train station for a train to Vicenza? I'm traveling alone and with one bag but will be getting off an overnight flight so I don't want anything too confusing for my tired brain. Also, does anyone know whether there are lockers/bag check at the train station where i could leave a carry-on suitcase so I can walk around Venice a bit before heading out? thanks

I think the cheapest way is a bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma, which is across a bridge from the train station (SL, not Mestre). There is a left luggage room at the station.

Sally,

here's the bus service you need:

This takes you to the Mestre train station - faster and more convenient than the Santa Lucia (SL) station.

Hope this helps,
Andre

If you want to walk around and look at Venice, you will have to get to Santa Lucia station, not Mestre. There are actually two airports that serve Venice, but both, I believe, have bus service to Mestre. I know Marco Polo does.

I would take the bus to Mestre, then catch a train into Santa Lucia and do your sightseeing from there; its right on the grand canal.

clevlandbrown. Venice recently completed their new airport.
I have not been back to Venice since than. A question. You state there are two airports that serve Venice. Did the "old" airport become a local airport (i.e. In Milano Milpensa for international and Linate for local flights).
I had wondered what happened to the old airport.
Any info you can give me would appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the information. I'll be flying into Marco Polo. I see from the trenitalia link that both train stations have trains to vicenza. It also sounds like there are buses to both stations. So I guess if I decide to look around Venice before heading out to Vicenza, the best bet is to go to the Santa Lucia station which is in the city center. Do both stations have left luggage rooms? are they safe? i am not traveling with valuables but want to make sure i have my clothes!

Loveitaly,

I first went there after Marco Polo was redone, but I believe it is where the airport was before, just rebuilt. The other one I've read about is Treviso, which serves some of the discount airlines, like Ryanair. Marco Polo is a very nice airport, small and easy to find your way around in.

clevlandbrown, ok now I understand. Thanks so much for answering my question, appreciate that.
When I arrived at the Venice airport last time the new one was being built.
The Treviso airport - have not been there but aware of it.

Fodor's is great isn't it? We can all share our knowledge.

Thanks again.

Hi sally,

>if I decide to look around Venice before heading out to Vicenza, the best bet is to go to the Santa Lucia station which is in the city center. Do both stations have left luggage rooms? are they safe?<

The SL station is near the head of the grand canal. You can take a vaporetto or walk to the Rialto bridge, San Marco and other sites. I suggest you walk down and take the vaporetto back to the station.

There is a left luggage office. It is safe.
