Venice airport to San Stefano
 

We will be staying in B+B San Stefano near the square and these are the instructions to get there . Which would be easiest (and more spectacular) please? We just have a small roller bag each.
Staying 4 nights of general sightseeing walks so would it be good to get a water bus pass on arrival? When we leave we take a train to Milan airport is this easy to arrange?

Is it best to get Euros from the Airport ATM on arrival (from Australia)?

By train: exit the station you can take line 1 (stop on the Grand Canal right out of the station) direction Lido and get off at Sant'Angelo, or line 2 (Grand Canal, stopping at the left out of the station, ) direction San Marco / Lido and get off at San Samuele For both then in 5 minutes as per the attached map (stops in green).

By plane: bus number 5 / departing every 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma - bus terminal in Venice (30 minutes) and from there the water-as above. Alternatively Alilaguna orange line across the lagoon in an hour Sant'Angelo stop (for times and prices check the website Alilaguan)

Well, to begin with, your post is confusing. You show directions using two different forms of transportation (train and plane) and don't tell us which one you're using. Why would we comment on a directions that you may not be using. Are you trying to say you're not sure what mode of transportation you'll be using to get there? Please clarify.

But, anyway:

Some people like to get a small amount of euros -- maybe 100 -- before arriving, but you can easily get most of your euros at ATMs. I disagree with the comment that exchange rates are "better at home."

The vaporetto pass is generally a good idea, but try to map out your itinerary to make sure you make good use of the pass.

Tix to Milan can be purchased at the train station or from a local travel agent in Venice (for a small commission).

There are ATMs at Marco Polo Airport that dispense euros. Also at Australian airports, there are ATMs (I think ANZ) that dispense Euros. I have a CitiBank Plus Transaction account - an Aussie dollar account, and this gives a decent exchange rate, and does not charge ATM withdrawal fees in Venice.

Getting to San Stefano. Two choices -leave Marco Polo by land or water.

By land - take a bus to Piazzle Roma, and then a No 1 vaporetto to the nearest vap stop near San Stefano - probably San Moise, or maybe Accademia (which would mean that you have to haul your gear over the bridge).

Leave by water - walk to the ferry / water taxi dock. It's a five minute walk, and it's easier if you use an airport baggage trolley for your stuff. Trolley needs a one or two euro coin, like a supermarket trolley.

Then - take a water taxi - it will cost you about 110 euro for the trip. You can arrange a water taxi in the arrivals hall.

Use the shared water taxi (we've done this a couple of times) and it costs about 21 euro per head. It will get you close to San Stefano.

Take a ferry. There are two ferry systems / operators in Venice, the ACTV and the Alilaguna. ACTV operates the vaporettos, and also operate land buses. Alilaguna services Marco Polo Airport. You can buy an Alilaguna ticket at the ferry dock, and go from Marco Polo to San Marco, and then take a No 1 ACTV vaporetto up the Grand Canal to San Moise.

If it was me, I'd use the shared water taxi every time.

I would take the Alilaguna if coming from Marco Polo and get off at S. Angelo.

I am pretty sure that is the orange line.

There is a transportation desk at Marco Polo where you can buy tickets for Alilaguna or the bus to P. Roma.

If you take the alilaguna, you don't have to worry about transferring. It is one straight shot to your destination.

The struggle about the trolley is you need to have some change and if you are coming from OZ you may not have any and the ATM will not give you any. So then you need to break a bill by which time you think, does my luggage have wheels or what?

You have loads of choices, including bus (which is pretty easy and you buy the ticket in the airport with notes), bus and train (which is a bit harder and makes no real sense), or the shared water taxi thing which is wonderful unless its chucking it down.

From the airport we buy tickets for Eu21 each on Alilaguna direct to San Angelo - and this is with the shared water taxi - or is it the water bus?

Alilaguna is a water bus, though not part of the regular vaporetto/waterbus system. Tickets are 14€ one way.

Venice Shuttle is a shared water taxi--a smaller more elegant boat--costs 21€.

The Alilaguna to the Sant' Angelo stop is the easiest way (except for the expensive water taxi, of course.) You don't have to buy tickets in the airport terminal if the line is too long - there is also a ticket kiosk at the dock where you board. I wouldn't really call the trip "spectacular" though. Bring a map with the stop and your B & B marked so you can find your way.

Not sure what airport in Milan you are flying out of but if it is Malpensa you can take the eurostar to Milan Centrale station then take the airport bus from there. I'd book these tickets in advance as there are better fares if you book in advance. Here is the website - www.trenitalia.com

You are going to have to walk to your hotel anyway from the Grand Canal so why take a private taxi? They cost over 100 e.

The alilaguna is a small boat with below-deck seating.

The boat we took sat about 12 people below deck. Some people stand on deck.

Yes, you can buy your ticket at the dock.

The dock is about a 10-minute walk from the entrance of Marco Polo.

Marco Polo is a very small airport.

We can't see the prices for booking early v booking on the day.
Is the price quoted for today much different to later at the station?
We leave Venice for Milan Malpensa airport on May 4 (Sat)for a flight to Crete leaving Milan 16.05.
Are electronic tickets reliable ?
Can't see a eurostar train listed. Frescia Bianca looks like one on that day.
