Venice Airport to Rialto Bridge

Hello,
I am finishing the last part of my plans for my first trip to Italy. 61 days to go..WooWee..
I have a rental car reserved for my last day in Rome and dropping it off when we arrive in Venice 4 days later. Is it possible to take luggae to the Hotel first or should I figure on carrying luggage from the airport to our hotel. Second question is how is the easiest and affordable way to get to the Rialto Bridge area from the airport.
Thanks
Gary

It spunds like you're assuming you need to go to the airport to turn in your car. Not so. Piazzale Roma right by the train station is the number one place (or a close runner-up) for car rental pickups and returns. And much more convenient to get to anywhere else in Venice.

Or is there some other reason you need to go by the airport, that I am missing?

In any event, there are no vehicluara roads to your hotel IN Venice (excluding Mestres or Lido - - neither of those are to be recommended in my opinion). Your luggage has to go by boat or human (carry) power, or both - - to any hotel IN Venice.

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex is right. I only have one more bit of information to add. Once you turn in your car at Piazzale Roma, then you'll want to take the vaparetto to the Rialto stop. I think both vaparetto routes no. 1 and no. 82 stop at Rialto.

Excellent info. I did not know there was another choice to drop the car..
I would rather drop it off at Piazzale Rome.. I am staying at Locandra Antico Fiori www.anticofiore.com close to S.Angelo stop on the public motorboat..

If you are flying out of Venice when you leave, the cheapest transport to the airport is the Alilaguna waterbus www.alilagugana.com 10euros/person. It does not stop at all the vaparetto stops so you will have to take a vaparetto to the closest one. By the way, the S. Angelo stop will be after the Rialto stop coming from the train station.

Actually, the cheapest transportation to the airport is the vaporetto to Piazalle Roma and then a bus from there to the airport, and it's actually quite easy. From Frommers:

"The Azienda Trasporti Veneto Orientale (tel. 041-5205530) shuttle bus links the airport with Piazzale Roma for 2.50? ($2.25). The trip takes about half an hour, and departures are about every 30 minutes daily 8:40am to 11:30pm. Even cheaper is a local bus company, ACTV (tel. 041-5287886), whose bus no. 5 makes the run for .70? (65¢). The ACTV buses depart every half hour and take about a half hour to reach Piazzale Roma."

You're right. I thought of that after I posted. Not as atmospheric though.

mclaurie -

True enough re the alilaguna being the more atmospheric choice. Though all things considered, the vaporetto still has it over any other form of public transit!

Leslie,
My family has an 11:00am flight from Marco Polo. We are staying near the Salute Vaporetto stop. In order to make it to the airport 2 hours prior to our flight, how much time should we allow for the vaporetto and the bus?

The information that I have from veniceforvisitors.com says that the No. 5 bus runs from 4:05am to 12:10am.
Is this correct? Thank you for your help! Laurie
