Venice -- Hotel Flora vs. Accademia Villa Maravege

Our family of four (including two children ages 8 ad 10)is traveling to Venice and we are deciding between two hotels that offer quads -- Hotel Flora and Hotel Accademia Villa Maravege. Is one hotel a better choice than another based on location or quality of the rooms?

I'm pretty sure you'll get opinions on both sides of the debate.
I've stayed at the Flora, though not in a quad. I love the location of the Flora, because I love being near Piazza San Marco. The Flora's location is as central as can be, yet it's on a quiet side street, side alley really. The Flora has an elevator and a/c. Also other services such as laundry/dry cleaning should you want that.

I've read only good things about the Accademia, I've seen it from the outside and it looks charming, and it has a patio. I would absolutely consider staying there myself. I don't recall if it has an elevator or a/c.

We stayed in a quad at the Flora 4 years ago. I can't compare to the Accademia, but it was a good-sized room with 1 1/2 bathrooms. The 1/2 bathroom came in handy when there's 4 to a room. This room was maybe on the 4th floor at the end of the corridor.

I've stayed at both (several times each) and, hands down, it's the Pensione Accademia "Villa Maravege" for me.

Hotel Flora has a great location if being on top of San Marco matters to you. However, I don' t know a single person who doesn't love the short, special walk from San Marco to the Pensione Accademia. A also think the Villa has much more charm factor than the Flora, and a much better breakfast and outdoor terrace. It also has it's own dock for taxi pick-up and drop-off. The Villa Maravege is a win-win choice.

Pensione accademia villa maravege is great! We stayed there last June. Have a couple photos if you want to see them. Good breakfast buffet. Excellent front desk staff. this hotel has many repeat customers so book in advance! The dock is great for getting picked up by a private water taxi on your last day when leaving. To arrive we simply took the vaporetto, cheaper. Right outside our room there was a public sitting area, and since we never saw any other guests in it, we just got lucky, when we wanted to sit there it felt like our own private sitting room, even though it was a public room on our floor. Great location on a smaller canal just off the grand canal. Best rooms in my opinion at this hotel are the garden view rooms. A reasonable walk to San marco, though we preferred to hop on the vaporetto and it's a quick 2-minute vaporetto ride to the San marco stop. The San Marco area is very crowded and it's nice to visit but you don't have to stay there.

Everywhere in Venice is central if you buy the 3-day vaporetto pass which allows you unlimited on and off privileges. Because you just hop on the vaporetto and easily get off in any neighborhood you want! Well, I should add you don't want to be too far off the Grand canal for convenience.

We walked by the Hotel Flora and it's near San Marco. Hubby went inside and said, nice lobby. I happen to know they also have a great staff because I e-mailed them several times and they were very helpful and friendly by e-mail. They even measured a bed for me because there was some confusion about the fact that bed-sizes in Italy are different than the USA. So I think you are choosing between 2 good hotels! But we didn't actually stay in the Hotel Flora, we ended up staying at the Accademia.

Near the Accademia hotel there's an inexpensive pizza place where you can sit outdoors right on the Grand Canal and have a pizza. doesn't look like much but their pizza is reasonably priced and decent.

Oh, if you want to see any photos of the Accademia you can e-mail me and write Venice hotel in the subject line...I preview e-mails before deciding whether to open them. [email protected]

Thank you so much for your input and good comments. I am leaning towards the Villa Maravege.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts about the Locanda Orseolo compared with the Villa Maravege? Locanda Orseolo has such favorable reports on tripadvisor.com, yet it is hard to compare it with other place since we have never been to Venice before. Both hotels have rooms for our travel time.
