I believe this is a elevator that you can take to the top if so where do you go to r ide it from. If we take the taxi there how long does it take also the cost and if we decide not to walk back down the 999 stairs is it hard to pick up a taxi to take us back to the harbour

We missed this, but people on other posts have said that the taxi ride takes about 10 min and costs around 5E. Can't help with the elevator.

There is no elevator up to Palamidi. You may be thinking of Acronafplia.... the park and ramparts at the top of "old Town." There IS an elevator in the rock to go up there... but you do a bit of walking to reach it (unless you have a car). You walk up a ramp at the end of the waterfront til you get to a "parking square." (look in your guidebook for a map of Nfplio). There is a corridor going into the rockface that leads to an elevator.... kind of eerie. It reminds me of a cheese Sci-Fi movie. it takes you up to the Xenia Palace hotel at the top (a hotel built by the Greek govt but now run by a private firm). You walk around the side of the hotel, and it takes you to the park at the end of the peninsula... you may also walk along the parapet, where the clock tower is, and to the other end of hte parapet, at that pont, you will find another hotel (closed). If you walk behind it, there is a nice road leading down to the cute pebbly town beach Arvanita (which u could glimpse from the peninsula tip-end).

If you wish to take a taxi up to the Palamidi fortress, I would suggest that you make arrangements with the taxi driver to return... or else to wait 30 or 45 minutes while you explore the area.

Normally people take a bus or taxi to the top and walk down through the stepped streets. Will you have a guide? It will make it more comprehensible. I was there a couple of years ago and we were recommended not to go to the highest part because there had been an accident, tourists had fallen and were injured. It has been a fortified settlement so that there is a lot to see from different periods. Sensible shoes are recommended.
