Vehicles and Laterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen

Can someone explain within these areas where cars are allowed and where there not. When taking advantage of different forms of public transportation to these "vehicle restricted" areas is there long term, safe parking for a car. We have never been to Switzerland before. We will be driving from Germany and from what I've read from this forum its possible we'll be without a need for our car while in some of these areas.

I don't know about Lauterbrunen or Wengen, but we've stayed in Grindlewald three times and I don't ever remember our vehicle not being allowed anywhere. It is a fairly small town with one long main street on which most of the shopping, hotels, restaurants and the Grindlewald "First" cable car can be found.

Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are both easily accessible by car. Every time I've been there I arrived by train, but each is a point of departure for the cog rail up to Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg, so I can only assume that there is long-term parking available. Wengen is reachable only via the BOB rail line and is considered "car-free" though there are a few taxis and the like around.

Hi Gunter,

Wengen and Muerren are car-free, and there's a HUGE car park in Lauterbrunnen for rail access up the mountain.

You are getting the "right word". I think it is technically possible to get a car up to Mürren, but the normal driver is not allowed to do it! Wengen is the same way.
The Jungfraubahn goes up the mountain side from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and on to Kleine Sheidegg where Jungfraujoch passengers change again.

If you are going to Mürren, there are two ways to get there. You can park your car at the lot in Stechelberg and take the Luftseilbahn up to Gimmelwald, then change cars for the trip to Mürren.

Or you can take the Drehtseilbahn up the hillside from Lauterbrunnen and ride the little train along the valley shelf from Grutschalp to Mürren. Either way works well. Usually the Stechelberg way is better because the is close to the valley station of the Luftseilbahn.

I have gone up both ways, but to date I have always stayed overnight in Lauterbrunnen.

Grindelwald is full of cars! On some of the mountain roads, like to Grosse Scheidegg, cars are not allowed. I rode up to Grosse Scheidegg last year on the post bus and thought it a fun trip.
