Vegetarians in Munich?

We leave for Munich on Saturday and have become increasingly concerned about finding vegetarian options for meals. I have already packed peanut butter (a staple for traveling vegetarians), but can anyone suggest any restaurants in Munich that serve good vegetarian fare or even have vegetarian options? Thanks!

Tonya,

There are Asian restaurants in Munich that might be able to serve your needs. My wife, a devout vegetarian, ate lots of Spaetzel in Germany. The market in Munich can provide lots of cheeses, fruits, etc. There are veggie restaurant locaters on the web. I'll see if I can find one and get back to you. Anyone else know of any?

Beside Asian restaurants, all Turkish restaurants offer a wide variety of very tasty vegetarian dishes. A town of the size of Munich should have several restaurants specializing upon vegetarian dishes and I guess that they should be mentioned in guide books or in a list provided by the tourist information. And vegetarians aren't that uncommon in Germany that you won't find vegetarian dishes on most menus. Don't expect a beerhall to provide you with a vegetarian meal but most restaurants should be able to do so.

Tonya,
As Hans mentioned there are a lot of ethnic food options in Munich, in a pinch I always go for either Indian or Chinese. Another option especially if you are on a budget is to go to one of the many markets and buy bread, fruit and veggies. If I really get desperate say, it's late at night you can always pop by a McDonalds.... for a cheapy green salad. Then in Munich there is plenty of beer and pretzles which are very yummy! I had no problems at all staying vegetarian in Munich.

Tonya, I know your dilemma. In Munich I found a food hall right on the main platz. It's on the lefthand side, down some stairs on the pedestrian zone heading towards the Marienplatz. Sorry can't remember name, but it's this kind of place (German cafeteria I guess) where you get a ticket on your way in and order food at different stations. You can keep going back till your done and then you pay on the way out. The food was decent, though not anything to rave about, but the experience was fun and I found lots of choices. Visit www.vrg.org for veggie resource. Have a stein for me at the Hofbrauhaus.

Hello! I'm a vegetarian and I live in Munich so maybe I can help! There's a really good veg restaurant called Prinz Myshkin, SW of Marienplatz. I'm sorry, I don't remember which street it's on but if you walk down Sendlinger Strasse away from Marienplatz, it's on the 2nd or 3rd street on your right. You can see it from Sendlinger Str.
My favorite Greek place is called Kyri's Taverna at St Jakob's Platz, at the far SW corner of the Viktualienmarkt. There are Greek and Italian restaurants all over town and they have lots of veg dishes to choose from.
If you want to try a typical German restaurant, I recommend the Ratskeller, in the basement under the Neues Rathaus (the building in Marienplatz with the Glockenspiel). Ask for an English menu if you don't know German. They always have a few interesting choices, very good fish and käsespatzle (sorta like macaroni and cheese with fried onions on top).
For cheap but good Italian food, our favorite is Bella Italia at Rosenheimer Platz (an S-bahn station just east of the center). They make a wonderful veggie pizza! If it's not on the menu, ask for 'pizza mit gemuse,' no problem.
There are good bread stores everywhere (most are closed on Sunday along with all other stores and the Viktualienmarkt) so you can always buy some good bread and cheese and have a picnic. Try kurbiskernbrot (pumpkin seed bread). You can get everything for a picnic at the Viktualienmarkt, open M-F till 6 and Sat till 4 (or around then). It's just south of Marienplatz.
Another good place is the Atlas Cafe. From Marienplatz go east on Im Tal (which changes to Zweibruckenstrasse) and cross the river past the Deutsches Museum and you'll see the Gasteig (huge new brick building) up the hill to your left. In front of it, the road you're on splits into Rosenheimer Strasse to the right and Am Gasteig to the left. Go left about half a block and you'll see it. It's sorta a trendy place with several veggie options.
Ok, one more since I'm on a roll. Take the S-bahn (or walk) to Rosenheimer Strasse. Continue east (away from the center) on Rosenheimer walking on the right side (south) of the road. On the corner of Rosenheimer and Bazelles Strasse is Leo's Lounge. If you get to Orleansstrasse, you've gone too far. It's in a cool old building and has a lot of veggie stuff to pick from. We live around the corner, that's how I know about it.
If you have any more questions, just let me know!
