Vegetarian in Prague
 

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm traveling to Prague for a week. Am I going to starve?? I know the Czech diet is very heavy on meat. What can I expect to find that I can eat?

I don't need/want to go to vegetarian-only restaurants, but if there are any restaurants that might have at least a vegetarian option or an ability to prepare something meat-free, I'd appreciate the recommendation!

A tough one. There are greek/indian/thai etc restaurants and of course Pizza and lots of italians for non meat dishes so you should live. But you are right a beer bar (there are many) will if nothing else put gravy on whatever you order...

I was there in the late 90s and had no problem, so you'll be fine. The salads were excellent, and there's always pizza and all kinds of other restaurants. I recall a meal centered around potato pancakes that was quite good as well. I do recommend learning useful Czech phrases for dining out.

Remember that most beers and wines are not appropriate for strict vegetarians. Not sure whether or not any Czech beers would be vegetarian.

Vegetarianism covers a wide spectrum; I believe this person is primarily just interested in avoiding meat.

Cafe Imperial has a number of meat-free items on their menu. Some nights there are jazz concerts.

I'm not vegetarian but I usually eat light and that's almost like vegetarian. Exmaple. In last 1 year I have been to Prague 6 times and, my comfort restaurants are Olymia in Mala Strana, near Legii Bridge and Celnici by the Republic Square. They are of the same chain Kolkovna (by Pilsner Urquell). There I eat typically potato/garlic soup that is served in a deep cup that is actually bread that you can eat with the soup. I'm not sure how strictly venegatrian this soup is. At least you don't see any meat in it. Just potatoes and vegetables. Then often I take a big salad only vegetables or with salmon, as main dish. Ooops, ... half litter of ... Pilsner Urquell. Very inexpensive. Costs like czk 250 altogether that is about €10.

I also eat at Thai restaurants such as Lemon Leaf (well the place is half Thai but serve decent Thai soup, curry and sticky rice) and Modrý Zub (near Wenceslas Square - fast food style - better to eat at their front bar area).

In researching for our upcoming trip to Prague in June, I came across an article in Budget Travel discussing some non-traditional restaurants. The first one listed is vegetarian. See the article at http://budgettravel.com/bt-dyn/conte...031001163.html

There is also an Asian restaurant reviewed, which may be of some help (although the dish discussed is sushi).

As an aside to kappa (I hope you see this), after considering your comments and doing some additional reading, we decided to change our reservation, and we will be staying at Residence Mala Strana. Thanks again for your insights.

jd, good for you ! As I said I have a bit of preference on R.Mala-Strana to Artesse. Happy planning.

We've just returned from Prague and one of our number is a vegetarian. We found that a lot of the traditional Czech eateries were not great, relying on things like omlettes.

However, there were a number of vegetarian options in the restaurant in the lovely Cafe Louvre - www.cafelouvre.cz . More surprisingly, the menu in the enormous beer hall U Medvidku - www.umedvidku.cz had a whole page of vegetarian options, so that would be a good bet too.

Does anyone know whether or not Pilsner Urquell is OK for Vegans?

You're not going to starve unless you choose to -- there are always potatoes, that's for sure.

Prague has tons of Italian restaurants, so you can always find something there.

I've been there three times and am not that crazy about Czech cuisine, but it is true real Czech cuisine has lots of meat. So go to a different kind of restaurant, just like anywhere else, if you don't like Czech cuisine. I myself definitely did NOT find that Czech restaurants had excellent salads, as someone above did, quite the contrary.

Thank you all for your postings! I've seen a few recommendations for vegetarian restaurants, which sound interesting to me, but my boyfriend is really excited that he's forced to eat meat for every meal for 7 days! :) It's good to know some of the Czech restaurants have a few options. If there are more, please let me know!

We were in Prague in 2003 and our family is vegetarian. We had no problem eating. There was a wonderful Czech restaurant with a vegetarian menu located on the opposite side of The Old Town Hall (where the famous clock is) - they had a very lovely restaurant and basement area and great food. We had great pizza and salad at Kmotra and a fabulous meal at Don Giovanni. Don't know if any are still around but I can recommmend those for good selections. We had no problem eating meatless meals - but we do eat cheese and eggs. Prague is really wonderful.

My DH and I are vegetarians and when traveling have always found plenty to eat, although many times it does seem we have Italian. Prague does have many ethnic restarants with vegetarian dishes and as someone mentioned Country Life is good--it may be closed on
