Vegan choices in Paris and Barcelona

We're looking forward to traveling with some family members over the New Year's holiday who are peso-vegans; they are vegans at home, but eat fish when traveling (not dairy or eggs, however). We all live in Southern California, where I guess lots of restaurants accommodate vegans.

I'm imagining that in Barcelona they can choose tapas which meet their needs, but what about Paris? I love to go to nicer restaurants for some meals so would like to know if you've had any experiences with vegan food.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I had seen that, thanks. Lots of them are less formal. Do regular fancy restaurants accommodate?

That's a very odd philosophy, I won't eat eggs but I'll eat fish. I think that is really a pescetarian.

I think that diet will be really challenging in Paris or Barcelona, actually, if it were really vegan, but you could eat at some Middle Eastern/Jewish place, such as in the 4th arrondisement (rue des Rosiers, around there). They have some good falafel, for example. But if they're going to eat fish, there are tons of restaurants where you can have fish in either city, so that shouldn't be any problem at all, except for the butter issue, as lots of places in Paris will use butter in preparation of fish.

I don't think there are a lot of great restaurants in Paris that are vegan, they tend to be holes in the wall, simple cafes, etc.

Maceo has some good vegetarian dishes and is a cut above the cheap places, see if their menu has vegan stuff (I htink it does) http://www.maceorestaurant.com/maceo...l#.Uyx46KhdVP0

I like Indian food a lot and usually have it at least once in Paris at one of my favorite places on place Gutave Thodoze (Kastoori). Of course they have vegetarian stuff, don't know about vegan. Their raita is the best I've ever had, though (which of course isn't vegan).

Thinking you'll be hard pressed to find a French Market scale resto in either destination that will go full vegan.

Indian food = ghee

You may want to retag this with France too to get some attention from the Francophilic posters.

Whoops, posted mid-thought.

Indian food = use of ghee. I don't know vegan rules, but I'm guessing the clarification process doesn't veganize the butter.

We were in Paris last fall with a vegan. Several really nice restaurants were able (with prior notice) to alter their menu for him. Verjus and Spring could accommodate and both confirmed with him as soon as we arrived that he ate no animal products at all. He found food to his liking at Willi's Wine Bar and Maceo.

He also found many vegan restaurants just by googling.

Thank you all so much! This is exactly what I was looking for, and I will pass it on to the family. Ribera's links will be great for quick research and I'll make notes of the other places.

Darn, I thought I'd tagged France as well, but I guess you need to hold down a key to tag more than one country.
