Vatican / St. Peter's logistics

I'm working out a rough itinerary for our 7-night trip to Rome in late October (family of 4, DD12, DS9). We are staying near Piazza Navona (Governo Vecchio). From what I can tell the wise advice seems to be:

1) Tour the Vatican in the afternoon to miss the throngs in the beginning, and
2) Bypass the lines at St. Peter's via a shortcut from the Vatican

We plan to meander through the Vatican museum(s) rather than dash to the Sistine Chapel and we would also like to ride/climb to the top of St. Peter's. It appears that the timing to do all of that in an afternoon (#1) will be tight (and possibly overly exhausting).

Some options I'm considering:

1) Use the above as Plan A with a backup of seeing St. Peter's another day if we aren't up to it.
2) Book a tour or pre-pay for timed entry for the Vatican earlier in the day
3) Plan on an early start at St. Peter's, have lunch, and then do the Vatican
4) same as 3 expect split the days

Note: the Scavi tour is not an option (age restrictions)

Thoughts?

I'd choose #2.

My experience is that you need a full day to do both, so I'd book an early slot at the Vatican Museums, do a full tour (grab some lunch there) then sneak out of the Sistine Chapel via the "groups only" exit (it's unlikely you'd be stopped) which puts you straight into St Peter's where the ascent starts.

Just to put some cost numbers with it for the Vatican part only:

Option 1 is 46€ (2 adults @ 15€; 2 kids @ 8&euro
Option 2a (pre-book) is 46€ + 16€ = 62€
Option 2b (official tour) is 110€ (31€/24&euro
