Congratulations, that's about 4 1/2 times what I received. We filled out all the paperwork and dropped it all off at the airport. I don't know what we did wrong, but we only got back 2 GBP!! Hardly worth the time and trouble, however we got it back a lot faster since we allowed them to post a credit to our Visa card.

Have fun slurging tonight!! :-)

Oops, I meant splurging, not slurging....

Lucky you,

I'm still waiting for my VAT refund from the UK from 2001.

Do you mean they really do give VAT refunds? Have been waiting for over two years for mine and will be surprised if I ever see it. Have fun splurging! Jackie

We are still waiting for the refunds from 2001 and 2000 that were dropped off at Gatwick.

This one was dropped off at Glasgow. Are the Scottish less stingy than the English or more efficient?

We did not bother at CDG in 2002 because for some unfathomable reason the forms were not in english.

>We did not bother at CDG in 2002 because for some unfathomable reason the forms were not in english.<

Nous n'avons pas ennuyé à JFK dans 2003 parce que pour quelque raison insondable les formes n'étaient pas dans Francais.

We just received our 4th and last VAT refund in the mail today! Our trip was in May 2004 and we dropped off 2 at London Gatwick for Austria and mailed 2 more from home for Italy purchases in late June. We received in VAT refund about $90 US. Not bad! Of course, we spent some Euro to get that!!

For clarification re. UK refunds of VAT, the following is an extract from the Customs Notice 704:

"In most cases you will be able to locate a Customs Officer to stamp your form. However, some of the smaller UK ports and airports do not have a 24 hour Customs presence. At such places there will either be a telephone to ring the officer or a clearly marked post box to deposit your form. You must ensure that your form is fully completed before it is placed in the deposit box. Customs will collect the form and if they are satisfied that all the conditions of the Scheme have been met, they will certify it and return it to the retailer to arrange your refund."

In short, if you haven't had a refund the chances are the retailer hasn't bothered to send it!

I don't know if this the same procedure for other EU countries

Hi, this question is somewhat related to this thread. Hope someone would be so kind to answer it.

I am student in the UK from Malaysia. Last year I bought a PDA and got VAT refund for it at Heathrow airport. I'm still studying here though. I just found out that I can only claim VAT refund if I do not return to the UK.

Which means I am in trouble! Because I've claimed VAT refund even though I'm not eligible. Does anyone know what penalty/criminal punishment that I might risk? And does anyone know what I can do to avoid trouble? I'll be studying in the UK for a couple more years and I want them to be trouble-free.

Cheers
khim.

You'll be thrown into the dungeon!!

Kidding, but I'm topping this for you. If you don't get an answer from this thread, you should post another to ask this question.
