Vaporetto Hours-Venice

We are taking our honeymoon trip to Venice (just 5 days of a 17 day trip will be in Venice), and we plan on staying on Lido. We intend to enjoy some of the nightlife in Venice, and we are concerned about hours of operation for the Vaporetto. Does the Vaporetto operate late at night--e.g. after 1-2 a.m. in the morning?

They run at that hour, but sporadically - like once an hour.

Cancel the Lido reservation and stay in Venice - that way you won't have to worry about it! It's your honeymoon... Venice will be better, trust me.

Rialtogrl is absolutely right: You must stay in Venice itself.

Do not reco the Lido. Trekking back and forth to Venice can be very wearing. And if anything is happening at the Convention Center (on the Lido) the wait for boats can be excrutiarting (45 minutes to an hour).

Do you really want to spend the rest of your lives telling people you spent your honeymoon in Venice if you never really stayed there? Lido is NOT Venice. That's like staying in New Jersey and saying you stayed in Manhattan.

Another vote for "Venice", I think you would regret it afterwards if you didn't say in Venice proper. In case you're from the West Coast, another example is staying in Oakland/Berkeley when you're visiting San Francisco...it simply isn't the same, and it's a hassle!

The boats are nowhere near as bad as people think. Line N runs during the night from San Zaccaria (near Piazza San Marco) to the Lido. The timetable is on www.actv.it. As far as I can see, there are boats every 20 minutes until 0241, then they're every 40 minutes. The trip to the Lido takes ten minutes.

The ride is only 10 minutes from the nearest stop in historic Venice, but you do have to get to the stop and hope you didn't just miss a boat and have to wait for the next one.

The Lido is a beach resort. If you are going in July or August and you want a beach resort experience, then stay on the Lido. If you want to experience Venice, then stay in the old city.

Hi tan,

I also recommend staying in Venice rather than on the Lido.

"That's like staying in New Jersey and saying you stayed in Manhattan."

I think Patrick has the Lido confused with Mestre. IMO, his rather strong analogy is unfair and too severe.

The Lido is not my cup of tea but many, many visitors (and locals) love staying there. Young Venetians can't wait for surfing season. If you pick up a Vaporetto schedule, and plan your arrival/departure times with a little care, the ten minute ride to San Marco will be nothing more than relaxing and enjoyable.

Since many posters jump at the chance to call my posts rude, what do these folk have to say about the fact that tanthonyh did not ask for opinions on staying on the Lido. She simply stated, "we plan on staying on (the) Lido." Does anyone who posted here know why she plans on staying at the Lido? If she happened to be staying with friends or relatives, would your criticisms of her choice be any different?

Frankly, without the facts behind her plans clearly stated, I think it's rude and presumptuous to dissuade her from her plan.

It doesn't hurt anything for folks to give their opinions about staying on the Lido. If the OP has a special reason for staying there, that reason won't be changed because of a few opinions here. If not, then perhaps it will give the OP something to think about. They could still stay on the Lido, or they might change their minds. It's all up to them.

As some posters pointed out, there are legit reasons to stay on the Lido. But the helpful posters above want to be sure that the OP has considered everything.

Now if someone had said the OP and partner are idiots or fools or lowlifes or some such for wanting to stay on the Lido, that would be another story.

tanthonyh,

It's understandable why everyone says stay in Venice proper. I'll go along with that.

In any event, we thought that the midnight vaporetto ride out to the Lido was one of the highlights of our stay in Venice.

Thank you so much for the input. We have now reserved a room in Venice instead of on the Lido with the idea that we will make a trip (or two, if so inclined) to the Lido. I was concerned about staying on the Lido, and all of you reinforced the reasons for my concerns. Again, thank you, and I will provide my update after the trip. By the way, if we regret the change in reservation, I am holding all of you responsible...Ha, Ha...Thanks again, you were all great help.
