"Valet parking"... how does it works?

Next summer, we will spend a week in the Colorado mountains. The resort where we will stay has a "valet parking" system. As Europeans we are not familiar with this use. What are the customs? Are we obliged to use this service?

Valet parking exists at some upmarket hotels and restaurants in Europe as well. You drive up to the place, get out and hand the key to the doorman or valet parker. He then drives the car and parks it for you. When finished, he'll fetch the car and hand the key for you to drive off. It's customary to tip the doorman, and yes he is insured to drive your car.

Hi Martine,

You usually pay extra for valet parking in addition to tipping the attendant (about $1).

At some resorts, valet parking is mandatory; in others, it's optional. Check with the facility to see if you are obliged to use it.
