Valencia - one day off ship
We are doing a trans-Atlantic cruise stopping in Valencia for one day only - a Saturday at the end of April. What can we do on our own in town that day? Is the port close to any attractions or will we need a cab or to take a bus somewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

You can take the bus into the main part of the city. Most of the reconstruction is complete and there shouldn't be any problems.
Have you done any research on Valencia? Are you aware of the America's Cup that's being hosted in Valencia? If not, then you need to check out the following web pages:

Hi
There is a "Hop on, Hop Off Bus Service" that will give you a tour of the city. I really enjoyed just strolling through the city enjoying the architecture and its narrow streets. If you're into amazing architecture check out the City of Arts and Sciences - http://www.cac.es/galeria/arquitectura/cac. If your time is limited I recommend using a taxi. They are not expensive in Spain. Valencia is also the birthplace of Paella - let me know when you find a good one

i imagine your cruise ship will have transportation to town or a tour waiting for you at port. Your dock may be quite far from the normal busstops, i am not sure where those ships are docking now.
You will coincide with the regattas for the a.cup as mentioned by robert.
This can be very exciting. All the boats stream out with the crew and back-up chase boats from 11 a.m on. It is a very majestic parade to watch alongside the channel that goes from the bases out to sea directly.
There will be a big screeen t.v. at the public viewing area ( where there are restaurants and bars).
After visiting that area, some of the team shops and exhibits, then you can take a bus or taxi into the Plaza de la Reina to jump onto the tour bus, OR wander around the old town, cathedral, have a bite to eat and then go to either the Museo de Bellas Artes if you like art, Museo de Cerámica, for a beautifully renovated building PLUS goprgeous ceramic exhibit.
Have a coffee at the Melia Hotel Inglés at their sidewalk café and admire the alabaster facade of this building.
La Iglesia de la Patriarca is in the same neighborhood, along with the original Univeristy of Valencia that dates from 1492.
When you return to the port, go to the 5* hotel Las Arenas and have a drink on their sofa-ed outdoor terrace.
we could have a Fodorīs mini GTG if you remind me closer to the date! I most likely will be here.

Hi,
Like Trvlingal I'll be in Valencia for a day on a cruise. Unfortunately my cruise is there only 4 hours !! Not enough to do anything meaningful.
Is el Museo de las artes y ciencias far away from the center of town? I would like to see it even if only from the outside. Or do you recommend that I limit myself to going to old town and walk around for a while?
Thanks!

cruiseluv! cannot believe you will be here.
i would love to show you around if i am around when your ship docks.
keep in touch. my email is my screeen name @yahoo.com.
the science center is not far from the port.
the center is a bit further but doable. in four hours by taxi you can take it all in. have a stroll in old town, then hop a cab to science center and then back to ship.

Hi Lin,
Thanks for the offer!
Wouldn't it be nice if I had more time? Then you could show me where to have the best paella. It kills me that we will be there 8-12, not during lunch time! What a waste!

Thanks, everyone. Good suggestions. Was not aware of the America's Cup during that time. I will have to look up the links given.
I love these boards. Thanks to all who contribute. Makes our trips so much more fun!

The cathedral was a place that I would definitely include on a trip to Valencia...I went there on holiday.About two years ago...Had read that a fresco had been found that had been covered up by a more modern ceiling...What had happened was that the artist had executed this fresco, and it was not liked..They refused to pay him for it..subsequently covered up...You can see it in a building nearby...They have scanned it and have an image of it...(To save pulling down the later ceiling)...
I really loved the city of Valencia...
