vacation in Eastern Europe
Hello! we are looking at spending about 16 days or so this coming June in Europe and more inclined to visit Budapest. I have read few forums on it here and it looks like it's a cool city to go. We have two teenage kids and our interests include sightseeing, hiking, water activities, biking and some museum visiting. We enjoy trying new foods and checking out big markets. Beach is one of our favorite places to be, whether it's an ocean, lake or a mountain stream. Caves and old castles are cool too. Thumbs up to canoeing and kayaking.
So I am asking for some advise on where else to go aside from Budapest? I was looking at the map and thinking Montenegro/Balkan peninsula..? We thought of flying Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, spending few nights there, then Budapest and one more place.
What would you recommend?
Last summer we went to Barcelona, then east of it for a wedding and drove to southern France/Gorges du Tarn. I might say one more Big Thank You to StuDudley who had pointed us in that direction and shared his french itinerary with us.
Thanks for any input!

You might want to consult some good guidebooks to narrow your options. Croatia, Montenegro, and other parts of the Balkan peninsula hold a wealth of options. Istanbul is a delight, and you have beach options in Turkey, too. Perhaps you could come back once you narrow your options a bit.

If taking Turkish Airline, I suggest that the few days spent in Istanbul be done at the end. Check the schedule, and you will find that it makes more sense than stopping for a few days if coming from the States. A few hours in front will get you to your final destination, the return trip will probably have a very long layover in Istanbul. Might as well stretch that layover to a few days.
