Uzes
 

I wish I had found this site before I had made my bookings, but have paid deposits and no going back. We are staying for a week in Uzes. We have a rental car so travel won't be a problem. Is it possible to visit most of the recommended places in day trips from there.

Which recommended places?

Good question, where do you want to go? But, it's a pretty good location for a lot of things that you probably have in mind -- Avignon, Arles, Nimes, Les Baux, etc. It's not quite as central as could be for some things (which are farther east) but should be fine.

dutchkiwi, I've stayed in Uzès three times for a total of four weeks. The town itself is intriguing; do be sure to spend some time sitting under the plane trees in Place des Herbes. The Wednesday and Saturday markets are a treat.

In addition to the places Christina mentioned, I'd add Pont du Gard, the Camargue, Aigues-Mortes, Montpellier, les Alpilles, and Orange as all being reasonable day trips. Lesser known sites include St-Gilles (amazing Romanesque statues on the entry to the church), Montmajour, Tarascon, and Beaucaire. I think you'll find lots of great things to see.

You could push as far east as the Luberon, but I'd personally find that a lot of driving for one day.

Enjoy your trip and be prepared to fall in love with Uzès.

Spent a week in Provence April 2006 and went to Uzes en route to driving back up to Paris. I wish I had more time to spend there. We got there just before the market started to pack up.

Anselm - your post has encouraged me to think of a return trip but this time statying further west and therfeore closer to Uzes

I am not familiar with France or for that matter Europe. A lot of the places that have been recommended on this site don't mention Uzes and I was hoping I wasn't too far away from some of the more popular places, but in reading your responses I don't think so. It sounds a wonderful area.

Uzes is technically in Languedoc and close to Nimes. The Saturday morning market is one of the best I've seen.

We just recently made our second visit to Uzes and would say you made a good decision as it will give you access to Languedoc cities and Provence. I would also strongly recommend that you drive to the Luberon towns at least Gordes, Bonnieux, Rousiilon etc. It will be a very rewarding drive.

Yes I am really looking forward to this area in particular. We leave Colliuere on Sat morning so will have to get up early so as we don't miss the market there. Thank you all for your suggestions. can't wait to write up my itinery.

Here's a short list of some of the things to see in Uzès itself...

• Take a tour of the Duchy (still privately owned)

• Stroll around the place aux Herbes and enjoy a meal at one of the many small restaurants

• Visit the Saint-Etienne church and the Saint-Théodorit Cathedral

• View the panorama of the village from the top of the Tour Bermonde.

• Visit the Medieval Garden…. Guided tours are available

• Just outside of town, on the route de Remoulins, take a tour of the Haribo Candy factory…. They don’t just make gummy bears

• Train and Toy Museum at the Moulin de Chalier

• Visit the Pottery museum at Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie

• The Château de Bosc near the Pont du Gard and its bicycle museum
