Using Tube from Heathrow... & airport Hotels

March 2004 - We will have a 24-hr stopover in London. Wanted to go into the city for the double decker bus tour, then back to a hotel near the airport before continuing on to our holiday destination. NEW AT THIS.

1. Any recommendations for a CHEAP (if that exists!) but easy to find hotel near Heathrow airport?

2. I understand the subway "Tube" system is way cheaper than a taxi cab. Is it easy to find / get on the Tube from Heathrow and go to one of the start/drop off points of the double decker tour bus? How much $$ would this tube ride be? How long would it take?

Thanks.

Sylvia

Sylvia:

Try the above link to find an hotel around the airport. The Hppa takes you from the airport to the hotels for 3 GBP and is very convenient.

The best way to get from heathrow to London is the Paddington express - 20 mins journey, they leave every 20 mins. Cheaper, but longer, options are the tube and the bus. SPend the extra money.

This website will give you details on the various travel options and cost from heathrow.

If CHEAP trumps fast, take the tube over the Heathrow Express. Round trip for one person on the HE is 25 GBP. The fare is less than 8 GBP on the tube. Taking the Picadilly Line from Heathrow into central London should run about 45 minutes to an hour.

Thanks. I'll look into the options. 8 GBP rather than 25 sounds much better, and 45-60 mins is okay.

Especially with the exchange rate putting your currency at more than double ours (Canada).

Does the Picadilly Line have a starting point right from a Heathrow terminal? Or do I need to go somewhere to get to the tube?

Once you land at Heathrow just follow the signs to get to the tube, I believe it stops at every Terminal. Although the Express is faster, we always take the tube (also Canadians) if we have time because of the savings and it's an interesting way to get your first look at English people. Particularly as you get closer to London. My sister swears they are at least a year or two ahead of us in fashion.

Don't know if you had a hotel at the airport in mind but we stayed at the Crowne Plaza last year and got a real bargain off their website. Rooms were very comfortable and quiet and you got there on a Hoppa Bus.
