using credit card in Tuscany

Any problem using a credit card in small cafes in Tuscany...how about ATMs in places like Orvieto, Arezzo, and smaller villages?

Personal experience - very hard to use credit cards in small villages in Italy in general - Tuscany is the worst

Uh-oh...do they have ATM machines?

Same experience with Tuscany and Umbria, carry cash, though better luck with VISA than American Express. ATM's are iffy in smaller towns but they are available along the highway at AGIP (gas) stations and in all larger town...though not always open all night, oddly enough, even in Florence.

We were in Tuscany in March and used credit cards everywhere. Only one time in San Gimignano did the merchant ask for cash, so we headed over to the nearest ATM machine.

And YES there are ATM machines everywhere in Italy. We found it very convenient to use them.
