Using ATM machines in Italy
I've heard mixed comments about the availability and successiful use of ATMs in Italy.
I would like to hear recommendations from anyone who has lately been to Venice, Florence and Rome, Italy in particular. What percentage of traveler's checks, ATM usage etc. did you use? Thanks in advance. |
Last year when I was in Italy I found the ATMs really common. However, we mostly used travelers checks. I guess I would say don't count on ATMs because you just never know, but they did seem really plentiful. Also they have some automatic money changers there which are also pretty cool.

Visited Venice, Florence, and Rome last year... Had no trouble at all finding and using ATMs. Carried Travelers checks but never used them. Exchange rates at ATMs were generally good. Have a great trip!

Anywhere in western europe you should be able to rely on VISA and Mastercard ATMs. I have used both in Italy without difficulty. i have not needed travellers cheques anywhere for around 10 years

i just returned from those cities, and in each, atm machines were readily available. we barely touched our travelers checks. have a great trip!

Haven't taken traveler's checks to Italy or elsewhere in about 10 years!! Take a small amount of dollars to change at the airport for taxi etc. and then rely on your Visa either to charge purchases or atm--never had a problem in Italy.(If you're making hotel reservations in advance, just be sure that they accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex etc.--there are still some very small ones that don't) By the way, we just returned and the exchange rate is super--$1%3D1850 lire. Save your dollars and spend them there. Have a great trip!
