Using AT&T iPhone SE in Italy

Any advice on a plan for using an AT&T iPhone in Italy? Has anyone used their 30 day international plan? (Although I'll only be there for two weeks.) Most important will be the ability to text the friends I'm traveling with. Also want to bring my iPad Air but will stick with wifi on that. Thanks.

If your phone is paid for, you should be able to ask them to "unlock" it so you can use other SIM cards with it. Then you can buy cheap SIM cards when you get overseas. When I checked AT&T's international plans, their prices were just absurd. SIM cards are super cheap in Europe.

If you won't be using data on the phone, AT&T's international plan should be sufficient. For $30, you can get unlimited texting. Calls are expensive, $1 per minute. The plan includes 120 mb of data, which is very little. Just be sure to keep data turned off, and turn it on temporarily just when you really need it and don't have wifi available.

The cheapest SIM card + plan that you could get in Italy would be €30, so your AT&T plan would be cheaper if you don't use more than the 120 mb of data and don't make more than a few minutes of calls.

Also, turn off automatic updates, or choose "updates only when wifi is available". (I don't know which of these options are available on an iPhone.) Otherwise, when data has been turned off for a while, turning it on will start using up your data allowance to update apps and OS.
