Dont forget charity shops as well. Places like Oxfam, Age concern, Imperial Cancer Research, Sue Ryder, Salvation Army, etc. have lots of used books at very reasonable prices, and by buying something there you are also helping out a worthwhile charity. I buy most of my easy reading at charity shops when I visit England as well as picking up an armful or two of decorating/gossip (Hello, OK!) magazines. I also usually manage to add to my collection of English mysteries and a few years ago found a first edition of Out of Africa. I did a quick search (+"charity shops" +London) on Google and came up with this list on the up your street site:
http://www.upmystreet.com/nrs/?l1=W9&cat=408

Murder One on Charring Cross Road has a good selection of used mystery and science fiction. There are many book stores along Charring Cross.

Try http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4824/uk-lond.htm

Keith

In Edinburgh, I'd recommend West Port Books. It's on a street called the West Port (NOT the West Bow), south of Princes Street, which has also at least one other used bookstore, Armchair Books. There are a fair number of used bookstores scattered around the city, including specialist and antiquarian shops. Try doing a Google search for something like Edinburgh secondhand bookshop and you'll probably turn up some lists.
