I didn’t think I had – but then again I’m English and as such thick skinned. I like the scots except when they’re bleating on about how hard-done by they are, ditto the yanks when they’re not in jingoistic mode.

There’s just been a lot of jock-bleat and yank-brag about. Trust me – you’d know if I meant to be nasty. I’d use sweary words and everything

Feel free to ignore me. Most women do.

I hereby give BTilke an honorary gold star. Good call, BT. :)

Poohgirl Jun 22nd, 2006 08:26 AM

Gee, although a certain jingoistic attitude by some of my fellow countrypersons can be found on this thread, there is certainly plenty of oppposite attitudes here.

Nikki Jun 22nd, 2006 09:00 AM

David, I'm afraid we wouldn't know if you were using sweary words or not.

Sorry to see US team come home. But, as I posted on US board: Pleased for Ghana that they'll advance.

Less pleased with level of US play and less pleased with some of the ref calls in this and previous game. That penalty kick call wasn't correct, but US wasn't playing so well that that made a difference.

Hope we'll be back in 2010 with stronger manager, stronger team. But thanks to the guys who did go this year -- & bless 'em for what they did!

I'm a big Ghana fan.

Love their fight song

In a Ghana da vida, baby!

1) "But [yes spygirl you can start a sentence with a preposition]], where do you think your real standing is?"

At the risk of incurring the Wrath of Custard, may I point out that "but" used in this context is not a preposition? It's a conjunction.

2) I was rooting for Ghana.

BTilke, perhaps we should give David a "yellow card"?

david_west Jun 23rd, 2006 12:52 AM

You could try – but you’d learn a few new words.

I haven’t been booked since about 1990, and there’s a reason for that.

Will anyone in the USA watch any part of the World cup now that USA are out?

Muck

MarkvonKramer Jun 23rd, 2006 03:38 AM

Muck,

I will.

Compared to bowling, billiards, golf, and the worst of all...poker, it isn't the WORST sport on RV.

Kate Jun 23rd, 2006 03:47 AM

Sorry to see you leave us so soon, US.

It comes to us all in the end.

Except Brazil.

Wish us luck, we need it (England, that is)

sunstar Jun 23rd, 2006 03:53 AM

Man o man, I'm gonna set my VCR for this one.;)

Seriously, Good luck USA **==

tully Jun 23rd, 2006 03:57 AM

Muck - I think a lot of the casual viewers who probably didn't understand the game to begin with will probably drop off. I don't consider that a bad thing though.

I'll continue watching every match personally, although sometimes I have to switch to the Spanish channels to watch when I can no longer take the inane commentators we have here.

SAnParis Jun 23rd, 2006 04:31 AM

I have also been watching Univision for some of the games. Brazil, Argentina & Spain all look to be playing quite well. I still think Brazil can be beat as they are so aggressive on Offense. We'll see. Good luck to England, though I don't like their chances.

BTilke Jun 23rd, 2006 04:38 AM

Although I rooted for the U.S., I'm happy that Ghana won--nice to see a small, often overlooked, African country in the spotlight and for something positive rather than the usual African news story of violence or famine.
I will probably also watch the Italy games now that Daniele de Rossi has been slapped with a 4 game penalty. I'm curious to see how they perform without Il Gomito.

I missed the news that deRossi got suspended. But I'm glad to hear it.

BTW, that incident with McBride shows one of the key reasons soccer (or, er, football) has a hard time attracting Americans.

Did you notice that McBride immediately got up, bloodied and all, and trotted to the sidelines with barely an acknowledgement of his very valid injury?

Compare that with the diving and play acting of the South American and European players. And don't even get me started about the stretchers!

I happen to like soccer, but really, if I see one more dive, I just may vomit.
