Joe, At the moment what you can take depends on the airline you are travelling from the US to the UK. Virgin is still allowing carry on luggage for US to UK flights (minus liquids) so your Ipod would be allowed. AA and BA are requiring all luggage to be checked and are restricting carry ons to the baggie of essentials only. No Ipod.

The situation is still evolving so keep checking your airline's website for the latest info. This is all less than 24 hours in the making. Give it a bit of time and see what shakes out.

We're flying BA from BOS to LHR on 8/29, and definitely not changing our plans. (We flew JFK to Istanbul on 9/27/2001, no issues -- the plus was, plenty of room on the flight...) Last week I thought the drive to Boston Logan with a closed Williams tunnel would be the biggest problem!

My new carryon bag is a ziplock -- portable, cheap, and fits in your pocket. ;-) (Not that I'm allowed to put anything in my pocket.) What I'll miss most on an overnight flight are my eyemask, earplugs, book, and bottle of water. Oh, and lip balm.

Hope the flight amenities are still provided -- anyone know about that?

My husband was scheduled to fly from Las Vegas to Pennsylvania on 9/11, my own return flight was for 9/13. We ended up driving cross country on 9/12 together.

I flew 8 days later for work.

We just returned from Mexico City last night and I am flying out next Tuesday.

My suggestion is this: Ask yourself if you can imagine never flying again in your life? If you cannot imagine that then why worry? These sort of threats will and are always here...let's just be thankful the catch was made this time.

I've been planning my September trip to Europe all year - there's no way I'm cancelling because of this!

We are scheduled to go through Heatrow and Gatwick on our trip to Italy - we are certainly still going.

However we are now not going to worry about trying to fit everything into a carryon and will just plan to check everything! Might even make things easier!

I try to avoid coming up with conspiracy theories of my own, but as an airline employee who has been wondering what people have been carrying in their so-called water bottles for years, what appears most noteworthy to me is how the ugly events in Lebanon and Iraq have been conveniently swept from the news. While I am sure that authentic would-be terrorists are behind today’s plot, I cannot help but imagine one step further that such people can be groomed by clever manipulators who “harvest” them for maximum media effect when needed.

I've heard about I-Pods, Laptops and cell phones- what about digital cameras and movie cameras? Hate to put my brand new Nikon into the hold. Course, rather get there in one piece.

A co-worker just left this morning for Amsterdam (Phoenix to Philly, Philly to Amsterdam). He just called from Philly and said he caught the news this morning before leaving so packed all liquids in his checked luggage, but at the airport had his toothpaste and stick deo taken away. A female traveling with him had her makeup all taken away. I guess nothing even "gel like" can go... and he's not even going to UK.

Just how would they plan on stopping breast-milk being taken on board then ? [and it comes in such handy containers].
Seriously, i suspect that things wil lrelax over the nect few weeks - i certainly hope so as we a have flight to Toulouse booked in September, and i'd quite like to be able to take my book. How selfish!
anyone come up with an idea for what to do with the contents of the average handbag? [so essential to all the party, holding as it does the passports of all the party, my purse, paper-hankies, wet-wipes, tickets, mobile 'phone, anadin, spectacles, etc. etc. etc.] Are we going to have to check this lot in,[apart from passports and tickets/boarding passes] and if so, what do we do when it goes adrift?
As to whether this is a political ploy -I doubt that a police operation of this size could be launched without some hard evidence, but perhaps I'm naive?

As things stand right now NOTHING goes into the cabin of a plane leaving a UK airport except cash, passports, credit cards, spectacles, sanitary pads and medicine (but only if not liquid). None of which can be in a packet or case. No phones, no cameras. NOTHING ELSE.

Baby milk, unless inside a passenger's breast. is allowed on ONLY if an adult drinks a lot of it in front of a security person.

And I'm not kidding. EVERYTHING else goes in the hold, or you stay on the ground.

We leave two weeks from today for Italy and wouldn't think of changing our plans. Because we are using air miles we even have to fly in and out of Heathrow. Oh well!! I guess I'll be doing some more searching on this site as to the best way to ship stuff back from Italy.

If current restrictions hold, I am going to put my wallet, passport, boarding passes, kleenex, and glasses (without case)in a clear bag that I think I received as a freebie from Clinique. Of course, you could go to Bluefly and get one of the chic clear Chanel bags.

I leave on September 9 flying from DFW-FRA, and return 9-21 AMS-LGW-DFW. I am thinking about changing the LGW to another flight because of the restricted carry-on. I can't do without my water and junk food. Also, I usually buy breakables that I carry on. I am going to wait a few days to see if the carry on restrictions are lifted. I was on a flight to Maui two days after 9-11. I was okay except I was suspicious of everyone.

So now we have to worry if our $350 digital cameras, IPODS, etc will be stolen out of our checked-in luggage.

I agree we cannot give in to the terrorists, however, once again they have won. They must be getting a big laugh out of all of this plus all of the inconvenience it is going to cause everyone.

I already called about dropping the London leg of my trip (JFK-CDG-LHR-CDG-JFK) and was told it would be $200 per person for "rerouting". So I guess we will be book-less, water-less, and nervous, but hell, we're still going! There is no way I want to cancel this trip after a year of planning.
