US Passports - How Long with Expedited Service?

I'm traveling with a group to the UK in October. There's a possibility that two others may join us, but neither has a current passport. I believe one would be a renewal and one would be a new application. I know things were crazy at the passport offices, but haven't seen much new info on Fodors in the past few weeks - does anyone know how long it will (actually) take to get a passport using expedited service? We'll be leaving Oct. 19, so we have about ten weeks, but we probably won't know if they plan to come for another week or so.

Thanks!

The timing has been all over the place. We expedited my two sons' new passports and got them in 1-1/2 weeks!

Others on this board have reported, even with expedited, it taking much, much longer.

I sent mine in for renewal in July expediated service and it took 3 weeks. Mine was a renewal. I would recommend that your friends apply now, expediated regardless(if they can afford it). Then, they have it whether they go on a trip now or later.

Hi J,

The passport office website says it is taking about 3 weeks for expedited service with overnight delivery service both ways.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences! I'm relieved - wasn't sure whether to believe the official web site or not. :)
