Joe, my German friends go crazy for the French's mustard (the yellow cheap one!), the Starbucks coffee, nachos, Orville Rodenbaker popcorn, Goya seasonings, cranberry preserves, buttermilk pancakes, maple syrup, plenty of "American " food they absolutely love!!!

Liquids break-and they can be heavy. I would not bother taking California wine to Italy...they have enough great local product already. Besides, I was on a plane once with someone who had a leaky or cracked bottle stored above the seat. What a mess!

The main difference is in the number of poor families, which is a bit highier in southern Italy than in northern Italy. Yet the average family in soputhern Italy ahs approximately the same level of wealth as a similar family in norhtern Italy. You are more likely to find a poor family in Sicily than in Lombardy, but your best bet is that in both Sicily and Lombardy you will land in an average family, with a house or apartment, one or two cars, a couple of TVs, and so on. There are still people that emigrate from Italy, but, except for a small amount of people that come from Southern italy to the north because they have found a job in the north. The bulk of emigrants people is not composed of non educated laborers trying to survive. The most part of them nowadays is highly educated youths (in particular scientists) that can't find an good job in Italy and go to the Usa or even to Spain looking for a job as a researcher in some university or chemical firm or something like that.
