US Customs pre-clearance in Dublin
I will be flying from Italy to the USA, with a connection in Dublin. I will go through US immigration and customs in Dublin. I suppose I will have to collect my checked bag in order to go through customs. Has anyone done this as a transfer passenger? Does it go smoothly?
I tried to flag this post for Ireland, but the link to post a new question disappeared when I did that. |
If you are on a single ticket from Italy to the US I believe your luggage transfers automatically through Dublin without claiming and rechecking. If you are on separate tickets you will likely claim and recheck. Let's hope you are on a single ticket...the pre clearance and feeling of getting off the plane in the US without the hassle of customs and immigration are just great

If you do go through customs and pre-boarding security, be wary of the woman checking personal items. She confiscated my contact lens solution though I'd flown with it unchallenged from the very first week that liquids became suspect. I glared at her all the way through the gate! (Pretty silly for an $11 loss.)

I did this about 3 years ago and I didn't have to get my bags. I hope you have a long layover in Dublin because the line for pre-clearance was very long, and my TSA pre-check/global entry status didn't matter, I stood in the same line as everyone else. It's possible that has changed since 2023.

I did this last year. Came from Brindisi through Dublin with an overnight layover. Did not have to collect my luggage. Got a hotel for the night and had what I needed in my carryon. Went to the airport the next morning and flew through . No lines at that time of the morning around 8am. Luggage arrived with no problem in Philadelphia.

I've only done it once and it was easy as could be. (I don't check luggage so I can't confirm what the others say but it sounds like you don't collect it)
P_M has mentioned a few times how bad it was for them. I'm guessing that could have been when they were having major staffing issues at DUB. I remember some discussions on FlyerTalk about it being a Cluster F for a month or so. |
Pre-clearance in Dublin
I'm traveling from Italy to the US in a few weeks, with Aer Lingus, connecting in Dublin. There will be pre-clearance of US customs an immigration in Dublin. I assume this means that I will collect my checked bag and recheck it after immigration, correct? If anyone has done this, I'd like to hear if the process was smooth. Thanks

You already asked this and got some answers:

hetismij2, bvlenci, a frequent poster here, ran into a Fodor's tech burp. Hence the duplicate.

I know they are a frequent poster. I was merely pointing out they already had replies on an earlier thread. There was no indication of a tech problem in the post I responded to.

I'm unfortunately running into various connection problems with the Fodor's forum.
For some reason each if your posts has been caught up in the spam filter. That is what is happening when you get a message that a post must be reviewed, Unfortunately this is an automated function and we cannot control it nor 'turn it off'. As soon as a moderators sees the post it is released and does eventually display, but sometimes that will take several hours. |

I am sooo confused. Are bvlenci (join date 2013 and lots of posts) and barbarav5414 (join date 2023 w/6 posts) the same person? Did you maybe use the wrong log on?? That could explain why you had some technical issues . . .

I've always been BVLenci. If I was ever barbarav5414, it was a an error on my part. Lately Google has been pushing me to log into things with my Gmail account. Maybe in 2023 I accidentally agreed and Google or Fodor's assigned me a new nickname.
Well -- this new post is using the barbarav screen name -- maybe log off completely and re-log on with your bvlenci info. |
